3 Rural Development Support Team EU Turkish Cypriot community support 333 The total population of the area is 34,452 that is 13 % of total TCc Population density is 42 inhabitant per km2 Majority of population is economically active between 15 and 64 (60 %) The rate of elder population (older than 65) is relatively high (12.8 %) Population :

4 Rural Development Support Team EU Turkish Cypriot community support 444 The main road between Lefkoşa and Mağusa crosses the area and devides the area into two parts as north and south The road between Ercan and İskele also crosses the northern part of the Area The road infrastructure connecting the municipalities and villages in the southern part is poor condition. The roads that connect the villages to municipality centers, and in the field are also poor Physical Infrastructure :

6 Rural Development Support Team EU Turkish Cypriot community support 66 Waste management: The garbage dumps are scattered and wild that adversely affects the environment and quality of life All the municipalities have sufficient garbage trucks, but some of them are old The solid wastes of villages are collected by municipality twice a week, but there are also illegal disposal of dead animals, green waste and construction wastes Waste water is collected in underground septic tanks, emptied with municipal pumping trucks and disposed to garbage dump sites Waste water pumping trucks are sufficient

7 Rural Development Support Team EU Turkish Cypriot community support Social services and needs (1): The number and distribution of primary schools are sufficient, but the schools are suffering from lack of enough equipment and teaching technologies There is no vocational/technical high school in the area There are three high schools, in Değirmenlik, Geçitkale, and Akdoğan 7

8 Rural Development Support Team EU Turkish Cypriot community support Social services and needs (2): Kindergarten exists only in Akdoğan; in other municipalities and villages there is no kindergarten that limits the employment of women Out of 8 municipalities, only in the municipality centers of 5 municipality there are health centers that provide basic health services All the health centers have old and non equipped ambulances Health centers needs diagnostic equpments and new well equipped ambulances 8

9 Rural Development Support Team EU Turkish Cypriot community support Social services and needs (3): Although the rate of elderly people is high, there is no center or service for elderly people except for health unit of Değirmenlik providing some health services for elders All the municipaties have well endowed football playing ground, but there is no covered sport hall or complex. There is no well endowed cultural and social centers for youth and women. There are some small cultural halls in a few municipality, but there are small and poor conditions. 9

10 Rural Development Support Team EU Turkish Cypriot community support Social services and needs (4): There are some village women courses that have basic conditions Public transportation is not efficient There is need for development of plots and houses for young generations There are some NGOs working on social issues, especially in Değirmenlik, Serdarlı and Vadili; but generally weak civil society 10
