4 Founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 The first animal protection group in the United States After Bergh was appointed by Abraham Lincoln as the diplomatic post in Russia, he was disgusting by the treatment of animals there. Created a “Declaration of the Rights of Animals.” Spoke out against bullfights, cockfights, and the beating of horses Back to timeline

5 Later in 1866, persuaded New York state legislature to allow the ASPCA the authority to enforce this anti-cruelty legislation towards animals. Back to timeline

6 Signed into law in 1966 Only Federal law in the United States that can regulate the treatment of animals in regards to research, exhibition, transport, and by dealers. Designed to slow or hault the mistreatment and stealing of dogs and cats for experimental research purposes Response to an article published about the mistreatment of animals in Life magazine In 1970, amended to include many more warm- blooded animals that are intended for research purposes. 8 In 1988, it became illegal for any ship to dump its plastic trash in U.S. oceans or navigable waters to protect marine wildlife from getting entangled, caught, and strangled in the plastic. Back to timeline
