Plymouth colonists are known as “Pilgrims” because they made a long journey for religious reasons.
September 1620 – Pilgrims left England on the Mayflower with others and a charter to set up a colony
November 1620 – Pilgrims landed at Cape Cod, Massachusetts and named it Plymouth after Plymouth,England (where they left from).

They settled outside the boundaries of their charter, so its terms would not apply to them.
November 11, Therefore they wrote a framework for governing their colony—the Mayflower Compact.
Set a tradition of elected representatives.
The Pilgrims set a precedent (example for other to follow in the future) for a tradition of religious freedom, which is a part of American democracy.

a. Not enough supplies brought with them
