1 70 Issues Related to Fasting Part 6
Things that break the fast

2 A person knows that it breaks the fast
Apart from Menses and Childbirth blood, other things can break the fast if the following three conditons apply: A person knows that it breaks the fast He is aware of what he is doing and has not forgotten that he is fasting He does it of his own free will and is not forced to do it

3 Actions that involve ingesting such as eating and drinking
The things that break the fast are actions that involves the expulsion of bodily fluids; and this occurs from the following: Intercourse Vomiting Menstruation Cupping Actions that involve ingesting such as eating and drinking

4 Ingestion includes all of the following which all breaks the fast:
Taking medicines and pills by mouth Injections of nourishing substances Blood transfusions.

5 In regards Injections:
Injections that are not given to replace food and drink but are used to administer medications such as penicillin and insulin, or tonics, or vaccinations, do not break the fast, regardless of whether they are intra- muscular or intravenous. So flu shots, allergy shots, diabetic insulin shots and the likes do not break the fast

6 What about Kidney Dialysis:
Kidney dialysis, whereby the blood is taken out, cleaned, and put back with some chemicals or nourishing substances such as sugars and salts added, is considered to break the fast. Why because it involves ingesting food supplements into the body

7 The Following Do NOT break the fast:
Suppositories Eye-drops Ear-drops Having a tooth extracted Treating wounds

8 Also not breaking the fast:
Puffers used for asthma Having a blood sample taken Medicines used by gargling If a person has a tooth filled and feels the taste of it in his throat, this does not break his fast

9 Also not breaking the fast:
Nose drops Nasal sprays Having the ears syringed Tablets that are placed under the tongue to treat angina Anything inserted into the vagina, such as pessaries, douches, scopes or fingers for the purpose of a medical examination.

10 Not breaking the fast: Insertion of a scope or intra- uterine device (IUD or “coil”) and the like into the uterus Insertion into the urethra – for males or females – of a catheter Dental fillings, tooth extractions, cleaning of the teeth, use of siwaak or toothbrush Rinsing, gargling or applying topical mouth sprays

11 Not breaking the fast cont:
Subcutaneous, intramuscular or intravenous injections – except those used for nourishment Oxygen Anesthetic gases Medications absorbed through the skin, such as creams and patches used to administer medicine and chemicals.

12 Also Included: Insertion of a catheter into veins for diagnostic imaging or treatment of blood vessels in the heart or other organs. Use of a laparoscope (instrument inserted through a small incision in the abdomen) to examine the abdominal cavity or to perform operations. Taking biopsies or samples from the liver or other organs

13 Finally not breaking the fast includes:
Gastroscopy Introduction of any instrument or medication to the brain or spinal column.

14 We must keep in mind: Anyone who eats and drinks deliberately during the day in Ramadaan with no valid excuse has committed a grave major sin, and has to repent and make up for that fast later on. If he broke the fast with something haraam, such as drinking alcohol, this makes his sin even worse. Whatever the case, he has to repent sincerely and do more naafil deeds, fasting and other acts of worship,

15 What if he forgets and eats something:
The Prophet has answered this by saying: “Then let him complete his fast, for Allaah has fed him and given him to drink.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

16 They may break their fast and should make it up later on.
There are some who may have to break their fast to save anothers life. In these cases: They may break their fast and should make it up later on. This applies in cases where someone is drowning, or when fires need to be put out or the likes

17 What if a person has intercourse while fasting:
His fast is broken, whether or not he ejaculates, and he has to repent. He should still fast for the rest of the day, but he has to make up the fast later on, and offer expiation

18 The doing of good deeds as part of expiation is based on the following Hadith:
A man complained to the prophet of having had intercourse with his wife while fasting and the prophet said: ‘Do you have a slave whom you could set free?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Can you fast for two consecutive months?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Do you have the wherewithal to feed sixty poor people?’ He said, ‘No’…” (Reported by al-Bukhaari)

19 In regards to husband and wives, the following do not break the fast:
Kissing Hugging Embracing Touching Repeatedly looking at one’s wife

20 Also: Wet dream does not break fast
Delaying the ghusl does not break fast Discharge does not break the fast Nose bleeds does not break fast Vomiting does not break fast – unless you made yourself throw up on purpose

21 Also: A woman can taste her food she is cooking while fasting – just dont swallow it Mucus from the sinus or head does not break the fast Inhaling vapors does not break the fast Gum ulcers do not break the fast Smelling perfume or using it does not break the fast

22 However The following DO break the Fast:
Smoking cigarettes Masturbation
