10 HISTORY Originally Hungary was inhabited by GERMAN and SLAVIK people. During the 10. CENTURY a. C. it was invaded by Asiatic nomads, the MAGIARI that created the Hungarian Reign. At the beginning of the 16th CENTURY, Hungary was conquered by the OTTOMANS. From 1668 to 1918 Hungary was under Austrian domination. In 1918 it became independent. After WWII, the Communist Party took control of the country and the Soviet Union suppressed the opposition. The Communist government ended only in 1989.

11 ST. STEPHAN 1. OF HUNGARY ST. STEPHAN 1. WAS THE FIRST KING OF HUNGARY. HE FOUNDED THE HUNGARIAN STATE AND CHURCH. For this reason he became a great Saint of the Catholic Church.

12 POPULATION, CULTURAL IDENTITY and ETHNICITIES POPULATION: 10 MILLIONS of people with a lot of ethnicities: German, Slovak, Croat, Romans, Slovenian, Ukrainian … LANGUAGE: HUNGARIAN, but people learn a foreign language as English or German. RELIGION: CHRISTIAN COUNTRY, with Catholics, Protestants (Calvinists and Lutherans), Orthodox Christians, Jews and atheists.

13 ECONOMY Good National Market and exchange with foreign countries. AGRICOLTURE: Wheat, sunflowers, corn, potatoes, wine, RED CHILI PEPPERS. BREEDING: Bovines and pigs, with a great production of meat, milk, butter, cheese and eggs. INDUSTRY: metallurgy, food processing, manufacture of construction materials, textiles, chemicals and motor vehicles. TOURISM is also important.

14 ECONOMY MINING RESOURCES: bauxite (to have aluminum), uranium, lignite and hard coal. Electric power is obtained through thermoelectric power centrals and through nuclear centrals.

17 FOOD Hungarian cook is characterized by an INTENSE TASTE because people use a lot of SPICES, as PEPPER and PAPRIKA.
