2 Geographical position:  Romania is situated in Southeastern Europe and it borders on Ukraine (North and East), the Republic of Moldavia (East), Hungary (West and North-West), Serbia (South-East), and Bulgaria (South).  The country has an area of 238.391 km 2. Flag.  red, yellow and blue vertical color bands, with blue on the hoist side.

3 Official name: Romania Official language Romanian Capital  Bucharest (2,064,000 inhabitants), first referred to by scholars in 1459 Population  21,733,556 inhabitans, 89% of which are Romanian  The largest ethnic minorities are: Hungarians and Szeklers (7.1%), Rroma (1.7%)

4 Time Zone - Summer: GMT + 3(the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday in October); - The rest of the year: GMT + 2 Climate - transitional between temperate and continental. The average summer temperature is between 22 o C and 24 o C, reaching values of 38 o C. During winter, the average temperature remains below -3 o C

5 System of government  bicameral parliamentary republic  European status - member of the European Union, starting January the 1 st, 2007. National currency  LEU (RON) 1 leu = 100 bani. Banknotes currently circulating are: 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 RON. Coins currently circulating are : 1, 5, 10 and 50 bani. Official holidays  1 st of December – National Day of Romania;  1 st and 2 nd of January – New Year;  1 st of May – Labor day;  The first and second day of Easter;  25 th and 26 th of December – Christmas

6 Dominant religion  Orthodox (86.8% of population).  Catholic (5%), Greek- Catholic (1%), Protestant (3.5%), other religions (3.7%)
