AP U.S. History

1) Concerned over the strong French presence in the Ohio River Valley Region, the conflict that began in Europe, known as the Seven Yrs War spilled over to the colonies and became known as the French & Indian War 2) As a result of the French and Indian War, France relinquished it North American empire which allowed for English dominance in the lands east of the Mississippi River and in parts of Canada. 3) This war was pivotal point in America’s relationship w/Great Britain, because it resulted in G. Britain imposing taxes on the colonies.

1) Issued by King George III 2) Forbade the colonists from crossing to or settling on the lands west of the Appalachian Mtns. 3) Why? Supposedly to protect the colonists from the Indians in that territory; but, it created conflict because the colonists, wanting inexpensive land, saw it as another control by the King

 Primary purpose: to raise money to support the British troops stationed in America.  Effectively lead to the formation of the Son’s of Liberty  Resulted in 9 colonies attending the Stamp Act Congress  Issues raised by the act:  Does Parliament have the right to tax the colonies?  Can Parliament truly reflect colonial interests?

 It sparked the debate: “No taxation without representation”  Stamp Act important for the following reasons:  showed that the colonists were willing to resort to the use of violence instead of legal action to stop it  G. Britain maintained that the colonies had no right to independence from Parliament’s authority  Patriot leaders claimed that it denied their British birthright as many American still believed they were entitled to all the rights & privileges of British subjects

 Massachusetts was the “hotbed” of the revolution spirit: Boston Massacre (1770) & Boston Tea Party (1773)  The Coercive Acts/Intolerable Acts was Parliament’s angry response to the Boston Tea Party  They were designed to punish Massachusetts in general and Boston in particular. Resulted in Massachusetts losing its chartered rights, restricted free speech, and the Port of Boston being closed until somebody paid for the dumped tea.

 In 1774, the First Continental Congress met and passed a resolution that firmly stated the colonies would resist measures that taxed them without their consent. At this meeting, it was also decided that individual colonies should start to raise and train local militias.  Committees of Correspondence formed to spread the word  Common Sense & later, Declaration of Independence  Lexington & Concord
