1 AP Vocabulary Quatrain - Stanza

2 Quatrain Definition: A poetic stanza of four lines.
Example: “Leap Before You Look” – W.H. Auden The sense of danger must not disappear: The way is certainly both short and steep, However gradual it looks from here; Look if you like, but you will have to leap.

3 Realism Definition: The practice in literature of attempting to describe nature and life without idealization and with attention to detail. Example: Walt Whitman “Leaves of Grass”.

4 Refrain Definition: A repeated stanza or line(s) in a poem or song.
Example: In another life I would be your girl We keep all our promises be us against the world In another life I would make you stay So I don't have to say you were the one that got away The one that got away.

5 Rhetorical Question Definition: A question that is asked simply for stylistic effect and is not expected to be answered. Example: May I ask a rhetorical question?

6 Rhyme Definition: The repetition of the same or similar sounds, most often at the ends of lines. Example: The Mountain by Donna Brock The mountain Frames the sky As a shadow of an eagle flies by With could hanging at its edge A climber proves his courage on its rocky ledge

7 Rhythm Definition: The modulation of weak and strong (stressed and unstressed) elements in the flow of speech.

Examples: Huckleberry Finn’s adventures on the river

9 Sarcasm Definition: verbal irony designed to lampoon Example: dialouge
