www.fugro.com4 Field Tape Standards History 1967 SEG-A & SEG-B SEG-C 1972 SEG-D Rev 0 1975 Rev 1 1994 SEG-D, Rev 2.1 SEG Field Tape Standards 2006 Rev 2 1996 Rev 3 2009

www.fugro.com5 SEG-D vs Tape Standards SEG-D rev 0 (1975): The nine track one-half inch tape is retained, but extension to 6250 BPI is permitted as long as it is compatible with the ANSI standard (ANSI 1973a, b, 1976). SEG-D rev 1 (1994): Providing provisions for using 1/2" square tape cartridges. ( ANSI X3.180 1989). SEG-D rev 2 (1996): Since Rev 2 is intended to handle higher density tapes, acceptable media is expanded to include: 3490/3490E, 3590, D2, and D3. SEG-D rev 2.1 (2006): One of the main driving forces behind a revision to the SEG-D standard at this time is the advent of what might be considered very high capacity tape devices. Of particular significance in the seismic industry is the IBM 3592

www.fugro.com6 Appendix F, which previously listed specific tape drives and corresponding maximum block sizes, has been removed. SEG-D revision 3.0 supports data on any fixed block, variable block and byte stream device including tapes, disks, DVDs, and network connections with record sizes up to any specific device, operating system, file system, or network limits. The plan is to keep information regarding specific devices, their block sizes and recommended usage in the Technical Standards pages on www.seg.org. This will allow keeping the information up to date without modifying the standards document. SEG-D Rev 3

www.fugro.com7 Status (seismic industry) ~1000 IBM TS1120 drives (worldwide - offshore, only) ~1.000.000 3592 JA cartridges in our industry (2005-2011) What to do? Alternativ 1: Do nothing? Alternativ 2: Establish a new de facto standard in our industry?

www.fugro.com11 SEG: The Leading Edge

www.fugro.com12 The Leading Edge (June 2011) Since the removal of a tape-device recommendation from the SEG-D standard to avoid endorsing an individual manufacturer, the industry has been requesting some guidance on what storage media are suited for seismic survey field usage. The TSC is therefore forming a workgroup with this focus. The workgroup will evaluate traditional storage such as various tape-storage devices but also will look into the usage of other storage options such as disc, flash drives, and memory sticks. The result of the work will be a document describing the recommended usage of the various storage options with respect to their suitability as primary data storage, long-term storage, or transient/short-term storage. The recommendations from the workgroup will be published on the TSC pages at www.seg.org. People and organizations wishing to participate in this effort, either by providing input to the workgroup or by active workgroup participation, are kindly requested to contact the TSC chair Rune Hagelund (rune.hagelund@roxar.com) or the leader of the workgroup, Nils Aatland (n.s.aatland@fugro.no). Regular status updates on the workgroups progress will be available in the TSC collaboration community. Launched May 25th 2011 (EAGE Vienna)

Disk storage: o External disk types & capacities (CD, DVD, Blu-Ray) o Advantages o Disadvantages 3. USB storage: o Current status (preferred over tape as primary means of storage ?) o Future trends (especially with regard to data capacity !)
