3 Explore n There is a major library for every Rutgers University campus. n Many smaller libraries support specific research areas. n The collections are different in every library –In New Brunswick and Piscataway, each library concentrates on a different area of knowledge n In addition to the physical collections, there is also an extensive collection of online resources.

Our reference librarians and public services staff will be happy to help you to find books, articles, and other information sources for your research and study. Let us help you expand your horizons

6 Learn Become an effective researcher. The world of information is complex and rapidly changing. Librarians can help you to navigate in this multi-faceted environment. We have tools for finding the information you need, whether it was published yesterday on the Web, or in Greece 2500 years ago. If you need help, ask a librarian.

7 What can you find in the libraries? n Books, journals and magazines, videos, sound recordings, government documents, and more n Friendly, helpful librarians and staff n Reserve readings for your courses n Research tools for finding information n Quiet study areas n Group study areas n Computers with Internet access

8 What services do the libraries offer? n Borrowing materials –Undergraduates have a 28 day loan period –Items may be renewed if not needed for another borrower –All materials are subject to recall with 14 days notice by e- mail. n Delivery services –get material that’s in a library on another campus n Interlibrary Loan –get material from libraries outside Rutgers University

9 What services do the libraries offer? n Reference assistance –in the libraries –by telephone –online n Classroom instruction n Listening and viewing –for audiovisual materials n Remote access –for Rutgers students, faculty, and staff only Adaptive technology and accommodations for students with disabilities

10 What do I need to use the libraries? n An RU-Connection card –Your ID card will have a 14-digit barcode on the back. This is your library identification n A Personal Identification Number (PIN) –issued by the Libraries n An e-mail address for getting messages –registered in the Rutgers University student directory n A copicard –for printing and photocopying n Computer disks for saving information –1.44mb floppy disks –CD-R or CD-RW

11 Some Basic Rules n You are responsible for the material you borrow. –If you lose or damage an item, you will have to pay for replacement and processing costs n Remember to renew material that you want to keep for more than 28 days

12 Some Basic Rules n Return recalled materials promptly to avoid heavy fines n Check your e-mail regularly for messages about material you have borrowed or requested n If you are out of town, make arrangements for someone else to return recalled materials

13 Some Basic Rules n Be considerate of other users –Don’t make unnecessary noise –Respect the quiet study areas –Turn off the ringers on cell phones and beepers, and conduct conversations where they won’t disturb other patrons –Respect the posted food and drink policies. Your cooperation helps to keep the libraries clean and protect our collections. –When using computers, adhere to the Libraries’ policies and the University’s Acceptable Use Policy

14 The Libraries are closed over Labor Day weekend. A video tour will be part of tomorrow’s orientation activities, and librarians will be available to answer questions. Please join us in the Multipurpose Room of the College Avenue Student Center, or in Room 103 of the Allyson Road Classroom Building on the Busch Campus. Check your tour schedule for times.
