The church controlled about 1/3 of all the land in Western Europe…giving them immense wealth and influence
From ‘womb to the tomb’ they controlled the lives of the nobility and the peasants.
The Tithe  A 1/10 (10%) tax on all your assets…it didn’t matter who you were… nobility or peasant…it all went to the church
BUT, WOULD THEY CONTINUE TO HAVE IT Their OWN WAY???

6. THE QUESTION THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE AGES WOULD BE…Who was more powerful, the church or the monarchies of Europe?
Popes claimed they were superior to earthly political figures…kings

7. ONE OF THE WAYS THE CHURCH CONTROLLED THINGS WAS THROUGH KNOWLEDGE
Most people…nobles and peasants…could not read.
Books were incredibly expensive…because they were written by
hand
They were written by monks, priests or scribes, in monasteries.
A good scribe could perhaps write 2 books a year
Can you guess what most books were written about?
If you said sport, fashion, or Kim Kardasian…you were wrong!

EXCOMMUNICATION…NO THAT DOES NOT MEAN YOUR PARENTS TAKE AWAY YOUR CELL PHONE…IT MEANS NO SACRAMENTS…IT MEANS NO ONE IN YOUR COMMUNITY CAN HELP YOU OR THEY TOO WILL BE EXCOMMUNICATED 3. The Serfs were not allowed to leave the manors.
They had no legal rights.
They were the property of the Lord of the manor…to do with whatever he wanted…yes, whatever he wanted!!!
