The Federalists The Anti-Federalists The Federalists supported the Constitution. A strong national government could protect the nation better than states. Keep order, control trade, & protect the rights of citizens. Pay the nations debt, & insure money had value around the world. Were against the Constitution. Said a national government would be too far away from local communities. Did not want to give Congress the power to make laws. Would take away liberty. Troubled about no Bill of Rights.

The Federalists Papers Ratification James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, & John Jay. Wrote news articles explaining why the Constitution was a good idea. Pointed out problems American faced: 1. young nation 2. weak 3. large continent Other countries might overpower > Many Americans supported the Constitution because of the Federalist & support from George Washington & Ben Franklin. Convinced after a Bill of Rights was added. 1788 – New Hampshire ratified. 9th State to do so. 1790 – all 13 states had ratified the Constitution.
