Rocks and Minerals
Types of Rocks Igneous Rock Sedimentary Rock Metamorphic Rock
Igneous Rocks Formed by molten rock material as it cools and hardens Classified as Extrusive/ Intrusive Examples: Basalt Obsidian Pumice Granite
Sedimentary Rock Formed from sediments that have been pressed together Classified by Clastic/ Nonclastic Examples: Limestone Sandstone Shale Conglomerate
Metamorphic Rocks Formed by heat and pressure Classified as Foliated/ Nonfoliated Examples: Gneiss Schist Quartzite Marble
Questions to think of: What do you notice about the color? How does the rock feel? What is the grain size of the rock? What is its weight? Other interesting characteristics? You will have 3 minutes at each station.
