Slide 4 WGISS CEOS WGISS 23, Hanoi, May 2007 CEOS Future Strategy (1/2) By future Chair B.Ryan (USGS). 3 challenges: 1.ensuring the relevance and viability of CEOS; 2.involving old and new space-faring nations and organizations into CEOS and building participation; 3.being appropriately resourced to meet the needs of an advancing agenda.
Slide 5 WGISS CEOS WGISS 23, Hanoi, May 2007 CEOS Future Strategy (2/2) 5 strategies to address the 3 challenges: 1.Use the vision of the CEOS Constellations (VC) as the building block for the implementation plan 2.Demonstrate that CEOS can lead the implementation of the space component of GEOSS by producing results. Deliver 4 VCs at GEO Summit (Nov. 2007) 3.Build CEOS resource capacity to meet recognised work loads and priorities. 4.Bringing absent space agencies (eg India, China, Brazil, Russia) to CEOS 5.Encouraging integration of CEOS recommendations into individual agency programs.

Slide 9 WGISS CEOS WGISS 23, Hanoi, May 2007 GEO Introduction CEOS Plenary largely focused on the CEOS potential role in GEO. 20 th CEOS Plenary Chair: Dr Conrado Varotto (CONAE) Future Chair (from Nov until Nov. 2007): Barbara Ryan (USGS) Invited: –GEO Secretariat Director, Pr José Achache –Paul Mason for GCOS matters
Slide 10 WGISS CEOS WGISS 23, Hanoi, May 2007 CEOS Support to GEO (1/2) CEOS Response to GEO Work Plan –Status on achievements on the GEO 2006 WP and proposal for potential CEOS contribution to the GEO WP. –GCOS: CEOS Response to the GCOS Requirements Specifications) well received at COP-12 (Nov. 2006). Slide 11 WGISS CEOS WGISS 23, Hanoi, May 2007 CEOS Support to GEO (2/2) CEOS Response to GEO Work Plan (cont): –Virtual Constellations: Detailed presentation of each 4 constellations Assessment by GEO Secretariat Director: –very good work performed by CEOS, –risk of duplication between the Constellations-related activities and other GEO Task. –Too much focus on the climate theme while each constellation is likely to serve several SBAs Virtual Constellations inserted as new task in GEO WP
Slide 12 WGISS CEOS WGISS 23, Hanoi, May 2007 CEOS Support to GEO (3/3) Long-term targets for the GEOSS space segment –Analysis and correlation between: the GEOSS 10-year Plan the corresponding CEOS high-level targets, categorised as space-based observation, in situ observation, integration, products, models and strategy. –Good assessment of the analysis by the GEO Director.
Slide 13 WGISS CEOS WGISS 23, Hanoi, May 2007 CEOS Relationship to IGOS-P IGOS-P meeting (Monday 12 Nov.) CEOS invited IGOS Partners to reconsider their positions on the future of IGOS-P as GEO should encompass the IGOS-P themes. Creation of a small group to study the best way to transition IGOS Themes into GEO.
