2 Question What is the present position of social sciences research in India ? Briefly describe the sources of financial support for social sciences research in India.

3 What is Social Science Research ?
Social science research is a systematic method of exploring, analyzing and conceptualizing human life in order to extend, correct or verify knowledge of human behaviour and social life.

4 Where does social science research stand in India ?
1. Lack of scientific training in the methodology of research 2. Lack of proper co-ordination 3. Reluctance of Business units 4. Absence of code of conduct 5. No sufficient assistance 6. Library management and functioning is not satisfactory 7. Lack of timely availability of published data

5 Sources of financial support for social sciences research in India.
There are two major sources of financial support <1> by promotional body <2> by private body Promotional Bodies Research is funded by research promotional bodies like Research Foundation Indian Council of Social Science Research & similar councils University Grants Commission of Research; users like Planning commissions Government Department & Business undertakings Financial Institutions The granting agency does not prohibit the publications of the result for consumption by the scientific community. Private Bodies A contracted research, undertaken for sponsoring user organisation specifies the nature of the work to be done, the time period for its completion and the conditions relating to the use of results.

6 Conclusion Efforts should be made to provide short duration intensive courses to provide scientific training in the methodology of research Efforts should be made to develop satisfactory liaison among all concerned business establishments and Universities for better and realistic researches. There is need for generating the confidence that the information / data obtained from a business unit will not be misused. There is need for developing a code of conduct for researchers. University Grant Commission must play a major role in providing all necessary support to research in all possible areas. Secondary data should be made available in various publications adequately

8 Question What is a research design?
Discuss main feature & ingredients of experimental research design & point out its limitations.

9 A research design is - Preparation of design of the research project.
- Need: Yielding maximum information with minimum expenditure of effort. - A good design is flexible, appropriate, efficient & economic. - Design which gives smallest experimental error is the best.

10 Experimental research design
- Used in experimental studies where hypothesis are tested. - Used in almost all the areas of scientific studies. - Three principles are 1.principle of replication 2 randomization 3.local control. -Classified into 2 categories 1.formal 2. Informal. -Informal design is less sophisticated. -Formal designs relating more control & precise statistical procedures.

12 Meaning: CASE STUDY METHOD
The case study method is a very popular form of qualitative analysis and it involves a careful and complete observation of a social unit, be that unit a person, a family, an institution, a cultural group or even the entire community.  It is a method of study in depth rather than breadth .

13 Features and importance of case study method
Case study method enables to understand fully the behavior pattern of the concerned unit. Through this method researches can obtain record of personal experiences Trace out the natural history of the social unit and its relationship This method facilitates intensive study of social unit, which is not possible, if we use observation method or collecting information through schedules. Case study constitute the perfect type of sociological material Case study techniques are indispensable for therapeutic and administrative purpose.

14 Evolution and scope The case study method is widely used in systematic field research technique in sociology. Similarly anthropologists historian, novelists and dramatists have used this method. Even management experts use case study method for getting clues to several management problems

15 Method with an example In this method the approach is qualitative and not quantitative Efforts are made to collect information concerning all aspects of life. Case study deepens our perception and gives us a clear insight into life.

16 Example Under this method we not only study many crimes a man has done but shall peep into the factors that forced him to commit crimes when we are making a case study of a man as a criminals.  The objective of the case study may be to suggest ways to reform the criminal.

17 Conclusion Through case study researcher can obtain real and enlightened record of personal experiences. Case studies are being undertaken in several disciplines particularly in sociology as a tool of scientific research.

18 Differentiate between Descriptive research and Analytical research

19 Theory Of Research Research methodology is a way to find out solution on any problem on a scientific basis. Research has its special significance in solving various operational and planning problems in business and industry

20 Types of Research Purpose Process Outcome
Exploratory Predictive Descriptive Analytical Qualitative Quantitative Basic or pure Applied Action

21 Definition Descriptive Research
This describes phenomena as they exist. It is used to identify and obtain information on the characteristics of a particular issue Analytical Research Analytical research aims to understand phenomena by discovering and measuring causal relations among them

22 Differences Descriptive Research Analytical Research
Fact-finding enquires and survey methods Collected data is analyzed and explained Ascertains and describes the characteristics of the issue Beyond merely describing the characteristics Describes of the state of affairs as it exists at present Explains existing state of affairs from available data No control over the variables Works within the constraints variables

23 Examples Descriptive Research Analytical Research
What is the absentee rate amongst a particular group of workers? What are the feelings of workers faced with redundancy? How can the number of complaints made by customers be reduced? How can the absentee rate among employees be reduced? Why is the introduction of empowerment seen as a threat by departmental managers?

24 Thank You !
