1 Our Next Meeting 2015-2016 Officer Installation Saturday, Jan 10 th, 2015, Social 6:30pm – Cash Bar Meeting starts at 7pm. Pointe Plaza Hotel located at 950 J Clyde Morris Blvd, Newport News VA 23601 Baci Italian Restaurant – Town Center Hampton, Virginia The meeting was called to order by President Ken Wood at 7:00 p.m. The invocation was given by Chaplain Gary Hodges; Pledge of Allegiance by Treasurer Rick Elofson and the SAR Pledge by Registrar Jim Samples. Presentation of Supplemental Certificate by President Ken Wood to Compatriot Everette R. Feldt for Patriot Ancestor Jonathan Pardee. President Ken Wood inducted our new compatriots Paul Thomas Garner (Patriot ancestor William Estes, Sr.) and Robert Lovie Haley (Patriot ancestor James Green). Poquoson Fire Chief Joseph Insley, Sr., introduced Assistant Fire Chief Tyler who was awarded the Fire Safety Commendation Medal by President Ken Wood. President Ken Wood presented Certificates of Appreciation to Gerald Runyon, Graves Committee Chairman and Joe Shipes, Past President, for being a USO volunteer at the Newport News Airport. Aiken, USMC Fleet Marine Officer US Fleet Forces Command, spoke about “The Swamp Fox: Lessons in Leadership from the Partisan Campaign of Francis Marion.” He gave us a campaign overview, leadership and innovation in action, engineering, positional warfare, and information warfare. He spoke of significant events of captured Charleston, SC, in 1780 to Charleston, SC, freed 14 Dec. 1782. A very inspiring and informative talk which was well received by the members. 2015 slate of officers was presented by President Ken Wood. Bruce Meyer, President Rick Elofson, Treasurer Gary Hodges, Chaplain Mason Ware, Secretary Jim Samples, Registrar Dr. Bill Old, III, Surgeon SAR Recessional was led by 1st Vice President Bruce Meyer and benediction was given by Chaplain Gary Hodges. 3 The Governor’s ChronicleThomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter, SAR Page Three January 2015 Edition President Ken Wood participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the American Revolution at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House in Alexandria, VA on the 22nd of November. Captain Guy R.A. Sorenson of the Chesapeake Marine Training Institute, Inc. in Gloucester County was presented with a Flag Commendation Certificate on the 24th of November 2014. Robert and Carole Lott of York County was presented a Flag Commendation Certificate on the 19th of December 2014. Norman and Kim Lloyd of York County was presented a Flag Commendation Certificate on the 19th of December 2014.

4 The Governor’s ChronicleThomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter, SAR Page Four January 2015 Edition President Ken Wood presented Graves Committee Chairman Gerald Runyan with a Certificate Of Appreciation for his work on the joint grave marking ceremony at the Ware Episcopal Church cemetery in Gloucester County. President Wood presented Assistant Fire Chief Tyler Evans of the Poquoson Volunteer Fire Company with the Chapter's 2014 Fire Safety Commendation Medal for his outstanding work in the Poquoson Volunteer Fire Company President Wood inducted new member Compatriot Robert L. Haley into the Chapter during the November meeting. His Patriot ancestor is James Green. New member Compatriot Paul T. Gardner received his SAR Rosette by Registrar Jim Sample after being inducted into the Chapter by President Wood. His Patriot ancestor is William Estes, Sr. November’s Meeting

President Ken Wood and Color guardsman Jeff Brown participated in a Veterans Day Ceremony at the Governor's Palace in Colonial Williamsburg on the 11th of November. President Wood presented Compatriot Everett Feldt, Jr. with his Supplemental Certificate. His Patriot Ancestor is Jonathan Pardee. President Wood presented Immediate Past President Joe Shipes with a Certificate of Appreciation for his many hours spent volunteering at the Raymond B. 6 The Governor’s ChronicleThomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter, SAR Page Six January 2015 Edition Wreaths Across America Thomas Nelson Jr. Chapter Members Mike Humphrey and Everett Feldt participated in the Wreaths Across America wreath laying at Yorktown National Cemetery held on December 13 th 2014 in Yorktown, Virginia. If any are willing to help on this years board of managers or in one of a variety of vacancies. please contact Bruce Meyer 238-9050 as soon as possible. The next Board of Managers Meeting is January 24 th 2015 at 8 am. It will be held at the Sentara Careplex Hospital, 4000 Coliseum Drive, Hampton, conference room B.
