7 Letter from Mother of Oration Contestant Dear Sons of the American Revolution, As the parent of a contestant in your youth Joseph S. Rumbaugh Oratorical Contest I would like to thank you for many things. First, I would like to thank you for sponsoring the contest and inspiring young people to learn about history. My son, Eddie, has grown from the experience. Thank you also for your wonderful hospitality to the students and families in Louisville. From the little extras like the 115 th commemorative bag to the elegant awards luncheon we felt welcome and special! Thank you very, very much. 9 Commemorations and Celebrations Commemorate any event relative to Revolutionary War Where no Revolutionary War activity, commemorate any significant local event Be creative –California Presidios –Frederica Naval Action in Georgia –Virginia GW Chapter Liberty Sites Project Participate with color guard and wreath laying

10 Education Support Teacher of the Year program –Chapter or State CD teaching aid –Available for distribution from HQ History Fair –Use Florida Program as model Valley Forge Teacher Seminar –Several states now participate History Website Public service spots for radio and TV

11 Veterans Partnership with American Legion –WWII Memorial dedication –Blue Star Salute Visits to veterans hospitals Present War Service medal to members Submit service records to SAR Library

15 Summary The SAR has a fine array of existing outreach programs. The Center for Advancing America’s Heritage will expand the opportunities for educational outreach. Every member, chapter, and state society should look for opportunities to increase participation. Please sign and return the card expressing approval of our programs so that we may show grass roots support to potential foundation donors.
