2 Overview Occurs when a person’s beta cells don’t make enough insulin. Must check blood sugar a lot so their blood sugar levels stay normal.

3 General Facts Two major types of Diabetes. Type 1 is insulin dependant or juvenile Diabetes. Type 2 is non- insulin dependant Diabetes.

4 General Facts (cont.) 18.2 million people have Diabetes in the US. Accounts for about 200,000 deaths.

5 Insulin Insulin controls blood sugar which can help prevent some diabetes complications such as blood vessel damage It is usually given in shots.

6 Type 1 When pancreas can’t make insulin. They cannot live without artificial insulin. 10% of all diabetes is Type 1.

7 Hypoglycemia Scientific name for high blood sugar The quickest ways to treat are 5-6 pieces of hard candy

8 Hyperglycemia Scientific name for high blood sugar. Symptoms include shortness of breath, and nausea. Treat by exercising.

9 Type 2 Take pills instead of shots. Result of obesity. 90% of all diabetes.
