1 Or: how organelles work together to carry out life functions
Cell Structures Or: how organelles work together to carry out life functions

2 What is an organelle? An organelle is a structure within a cell that carries out a specific function that supports the life of the cell and, consequently, life of an organism.

3 What are some functions of the organelles?
Bring in nutrients Remove waste Generating and releasing energy Making substances that the cell needs Reproducing Regulating cell processes

4 Organelles in plant cells vs. organelles in animal cells
Think about the structure and function of plants and animals. Do you think their respective cells would be same or different?

5 Plant Cell

6 Animal Cell

7 Complete this Venn Diagram outlining the differences and similarities of plant and animal cells

8 Organelles Animal Nucleus Cell membrane Cytoplasm Cytoskeleton
Mitochondria Vacuoles Endoplasmic reticulum Ribosomes Vesicles Golgi body Plant Nucleus Cell membrane Cell wall Cytoplasm Chloroplast Mitochondria Vacuoles Endoplasmic reticulum Vesicles Golgi body

9 Cell Membrane Separates the inside of the cell from the external environment and controls the flow of materials in and out of the cell.

10 Cytoplasm Inside of the cell, contains sugars, water and other life supporting substances. Also, contains all the organelles.

11 Mitochondria Energy is released from glucose (sugar) to fuel cell activities.

12 Endoplasmic Reticulum
A network of channels that help transport materials made in the cell. Connected to the nucleus.

13 Golgi Body Sorts and packages proteins and other molecules for transport out of the cell.

14 Nucleus Controls all cell activities.

15 Vacuoles Contain water and other materials. Also aid in maintaining structure and transporting small molecules.

16 Cell Wall (plants only)
Tough and rigid. Outside cell membrane. Supports the cell.

17 Chloroplast (plants only)
Traps energy from the sun  makes glucose (photosynthesis)  glucose broken down in mitochondria  powers cell activities.
