Objectives Show how PBM is different from “Floating” ball valves. Show how PBM’s self-flushing ball combined with PBM’s exclusive up and downstream sealing can be used to effectively clean a ball valve Show why PBM ball valves can be used in high purity applications. One of PBM’s best kept secrets. Process media can flow through the ball. Cleaning media can flow around the ball. Allows body cavity options to minimize problems with trapped fluid in the valve body that could contaminate the process or prevent smooth operation of the valve in sanitary and other applications.

7 Body Cavity Fillers PBM was first to introduce, others have copied

Designed to fill the cavity of the valve between the body and the ball -- whatever is in the ball stays in the ball. Minimize problems with trapped fluid in the valve body that could contaminate the process or prevent smooth operation of the valve. Required in some applications for USDA compliance. Cavity Fillers

8 Bottom Entry Stem & Live-Loaded Seal
Machined Teflon stem packings; two on the top, and one on the bottom Mechanically loaded (“live-loaded”) with Belleville spring washers Washers compensate for normal wear by providing a constant load on the stem seal, creating the memory that Teflon seals don’t have. Eliminates need for frequent adjustments required of a packing gland style. If necessary, PBM’s stem seal load can be adjusted without replacing the seals. This reduces wear characteristics, and increases cycle life.

11 Self-Flushing Ball PBM self-flushing balls join the cavity of the valve with the piping when the valve is open. The holes allow product to fill the cavity just as it fills the piping. When flushing the lines, the cleaning fluid fills the cavity and displaces the product. No features are sacrificed when self- flushing balls are used. The valves remain double-seated and seal in either direction when closed. Also available in diverter port and multi-port valves.

19 Testing PBM Procedure 0904-2: Flushing Tests of Liquid Through a
2-Inch Valve with TFM® seats and a Self-Flushing Ball

20 Testing cont. Test Valve
The test valve is PBM assembly SIHLH5X-G A. It is a 2-inch valve with sanitary clamp ends, TFM ® seats, and a self-flushing ball (part SIHLH508SF). The bore through the valve is 1.87-inches with no contractions or expansions. Flushing Procedure Heat the hot water test facility to 170° to 180°F with a slave valve installed in lieu of the test valve. Blank off one end of the test valve and position the axis of the valve vertically. With the valve open fill it with product. Cycle the valve 5 times then drain product out. Do not drain the bottom of the body. The valve should be horizontal during draining. Secure flow in the test facility and valve out and remove the slave valve and install the test valve in the open position.

21 Testing cont. Valve in the test valve and initiate flow of about 40 to 43 gpm (about 5 fps) through the test valve. Do not cycle the test valve while flushing. After 30 minutes has elapsed, secure the pump and remove the test valve. Disassemble the test valve and inspect for evidence of product. Take photographs as needed. Flush product from the test facility by performing fill and drains then repeat these steps for additional product flushes. Product Liquid detergent (dark blue in color) and liquid fabric softener (light blue in color). Results The table below provides the results of the flushes. Flush numbers designated with a “D” are liquid fabric softener flushes and flushes numbers designated with a “T” are liquid detergent flushes. The last two runs were made using a standard ball, one run with fabric softener and one run with liquid detergent.

22 Testing cont. * Bled and fed water during flush because of high bubble concentration in water. Bubbles reduced on flush 1T, but not eliminated. On 2T and 3T bubbles nearly eliminated. ** Bubbles in flush water and on all surfaces which rapidly disappeared with time. See photograph below.

23 Testing cont. As evidenced by the photographs, the flushes with the self-flushing ball cleaned the valve extremely well, regardless of product, as evidenced by the absence of the light blue fabric softener or darker blue liquid detergent. The flushes with a standard ball did not clean up with either product. When the end fitting bolting was loosened the product ran out of the cavity (see photographs). The standard ball was not expected to clean up but was tested for comparative purposes. Conclusions The self-flushing ball is extremely effective in cleaning the valve using the products tested and for the time, temperature, and velocity tested (5 fps).
