STEAM TRAPS A steam trap is an automatic valve that allows the condensate to discharge but traps or prevent the flow of steam. There are three basic purposes of using steam trap 1- to remove the condensate 2- to remove the non condensables 3-to prevent the discharge of steam engineering-resource.com
4
Applications Steam traps are used in all types of steam heated equipments like 1- evaporators, 2- reboilers, 3- steam jacketed vessels. Steam condenses after giving its latent heat. This condensate must be removed continuously without allowing the steam to blow out. engineering-resource.com

9
Working principle It distinguishes between steam and the condensate on the basis of 1- Density difference 2- Temperature difference 3- Difference in the flow characteristics engineering-resource.com
10
Types of steam traps Some common types of steam traps are Mechanical steam traps Thermostatic traps Thermodynamic traps engineering-resource.com
11
Mechanical steam traps This type of traps function on the basis of density difference. Common types are 1-float and thermostatic traps 2-inverted bucket traps engineering-resource.com
12
Float and thermostatic trap Construction & working It Consists of 1- condensate chamber 2- float 3- valve for the discharge of condensate. When the condensate flow into the chamber, the float rises and open up the valve connected to it. engineering-resource.com
14
Continue Float and thermostatic trap is fitted with thermostatically regulated vent above the condensate level. Its basic purpose is to remove the non condensables that are present in the steam. Thermostatic vent remain open below the saturation temperature of steam engineering-resource.com

16
Inverted bucket trap Constuction It has float of the shape of inverted cylinder or bucket open at the bottom. The orifice in the condensate discharge passage has a valve seat which operates by the movement of lever attach to the bucket. engineering-resource.com
18
Working When there is no or little condensate in the trap. The bucket is kept floating by the entering steam. As the condensate accumulate bucket sinks in the condensate. The valve get opened and the condensate get discharged. engineering-resource.com

21
Thermostatic traps Types of thermostatic traps Its two important types are 1- liquid expansion thermostatic trap 2- balanced pressure thermostatic trap It also include bimettalic traps engineering-resource.com
22
LIQUID EXPANSION THERMOSTATIC TRAPS Construction It consist of closed metal cartridge. Filled with oil or suitable liquid. Cartridge contains corrugations, the other end of which contains a valve. engineering-resource.com
24
Working The condensate collects in the traps, Liquid in the traps cool down and the Catridge contracts The valve opens and the condensate discharge. In the absence of condensate, cartridge comes in contact with the steam that is at a higher temperature than the cooled condensate. The valve then get closed. And stops the flow of steam out of trap. engineering-resource.com

26
Balanced pressure thermostatic traps Construction & working A type of thermostatic traps consists of a flexible bellows, filled with a suitable liquid, containing a valve at its end. The valve is closed by the boiling of liquid, and the resultant pressure rise and the expansion of bellows. As the condensate collects in the traps, it cools down and the temperature of the bellows also drops down. engineering-resource.com
28
Continue Bellows contracts the valve get opened and the condensate is discharged. When the steam enters the trap, it raises the temperature in the bellows, the bellows expands and the valve again get closed. engineering-resource.com

THERMODYNAMIC TRAPS Construction & working It consist of coin sized flat disc on a flat seat that acts as a valve. The disc covers the orifices for the condensate flow. It has a single moving part (the disc), is rugged in construction and operates relatively smoothly engineering-resource.com
31
Continue The collected condensate cool down, leave the disc and goes out through the orifice. When the condensate is discharged, a high velocity steam creates a low pressure below the disc. The disc settles down on the seat and closes the orifices. engineering-resource.com
