2.  Create a poem or rap that tells the class where you’re from without saying the name of the place.  Stanza 1 : What symbols represent the geographic area where you are from?  Stanza 2-3 : Family tree.  Stanza 4 : How can you make an ending that will modify your strong heritage?

3.  Below are the opening lines from some short stories and novels. Pick one that interests you and see what kind of poem it generates:  Night fell. The darkness was thin.  There is an evil moment on awakening when all things seem to pause.  It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed.  God help me.  She lay in the dark and cried.  The big house was still, almost empty.

4.  A poem in which the first letter of each line spells a word which can be read vertically. The rhyme scheme and number of lines may vary. Hockey is my favorite sport. On the ice or on the street. Cool and fun. Keep on playing. Exercise and stronger. You should try it.

5.  A humorous, nonsense verse consisting of a triplet and a couplet ( 5 lines).  The first line of a limerick often begins with “There once was” or “There was a” and ends with the name of a person.  Lines 1,2,5 rhyme.  Lines 3 and 4 form a rhyming couplet.

6.  There once was a student at school. Who would not conform to the rule. He used all his time To write a funny rhyme And limericks he used as his tool.

7.  There once was a princess named Meg  Who accidently broke her __________.  She slipped on the _________.  Not one but twice.  Take no pity on her, I ______.

8.  Write a limerick on your own.

9.  Line 1: one word  Line 2: two words that describe the 1 st  Line 3: three words that show action  Line 4: four words that convey feeling  Line 5: one word that refers back to line 1

11.  Line 1:5 syllables  Line 2: 7 syllables  Line 3: 5 syllables Hanging from a branch Ripe, bright red, and succulent Waiting to be picked.

12.  Write a poem with 2 examples of alliteration and two examples of onomatopoeia.  The poem can be free verse and a minimum of 3 stanzas.

13.  Write a poem that has examples of at least 3 poetic device (ex. Simile, metaphor, etc.)  It can be free verse.

14.  Ex.  The Thrush’s Nest  Within a thick and spreading hawthorn bush,  That overhung a mole-hill large and round,  I heard from morn to morn a merry thrush  Sing hymns to sunrise, and I drank the sound   With joy, and, often an intruding guest,  I watched her secret toils from day to day---  How true she warped the moss to from a nest,  And modeled it within with wood and clay;   And by and by, like heath-bells gilt with dew,  There lay her shining eggs, as bright as flowers,  Ink-spotted over shells of greeny blue;  And there I witnessed, in the sunny hours   A brood of nature’s ministrels chirp and fly,  Glad as that sunshine and the laughing sky.  NOTICE THE RHYME SCHEME IS ABAB CDCD EFEF GG

15.  Find the poem that is written by someone else and answer the four questions on your checklist.  Insert into your booklet.
