4 Science Fiction a.k.a. Speculative Fiction Science Fiction (often called sci-fi) is a popular genre of fiction in which the narrative world differs from our own present or historical reality in at least one significant way. This difference may be technological, physical, historical, etc., but not magical (see Fantasy). -Project Gutenberg

5 Themes Themes are the big (or universal) ideas an author is writing about in a work of literature. –Here are four themes from The House of the Scorpion (HOTS): The value of life The importance of developing self-identity The relationship between religion and science The impact of friendship

6 Long Term Assignment Quote Notes For each chapter you will need to produce Quote Notes. This involves creating a double-entry journal where you write a quotation on the left, and explain its significance on the right. These should be written on binder paper, and stapled neatly. You will turn them in on 3/26. Each chapter requires you to produce two Quote Notes. –One on a theme –One on a literary device Literary devices could be (but are not limited to) metaphors, similes, imagery, personification, irony and alliteration.
