1 Understanding EPEAT

2 41 reduce environmental impact 3,500+ What is EPEAT? 45+
EPEAT is the definitive global registry for greener electronics. Designed who purchases electronics—from consumers to enterprises—evaluate, compare and select products that to help everyone reduce environmental impact EPEAT is the definitive global registry for greener electronics, covering the most products from the broadest range of manufacturers. EPEAT is a leading resource for enterprise, SMB, government and institutional purchasers as well as individual consumers seeking electronic products designed to reduce environmental impact. The registry EPEAT rating system was designed to: - Provide marketplace rewards for innovation by recognizing products that reduce environmental and health impacts - Enable product comparisons based on environmental attributes - Make purchasing based on environmental criteria simple and clear EPEAT is an acronym for "Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool" but it is always written “EPEAT.” 3,500+ Contains products 45+ 41 from manufacturers in countries

3 What products does EPEAT cover?
Desktops, laptops/notebooks, workstations, thin clients and displays Imaging devices and televisions Servers and mobile devices Currently: Coming soon: Up next: Currently, EPEAT covers two types of electronic products: PCs and PC displays. These includes desktops, laptops/notebooks, workstations, thin clients and monitors. Standards are currently in development for other categories, including imaging equipment (such as printers, copiers and fax machines) and televisions. EPEAT expects these products will be added to the registry in 2012. Servers and mobile devices will also be considered for addition to the registry as standards for those categories become available.

4 What criteria does a product have to meet?
EPEAT’s environmental criteria cover the complete product lifecycle from design to recycling. The criteria were developed by stakeholders in a consensus process The criteria fall into 8 categories that reflect different environmental attributes covering the complete product lifecycle: 1. Reduction/elimination of environmentally sensitive materials 2. Material selection 3. Design for end of life 4. Product longevity/life extension 5. Energy conservation 6. End-of-life management 7. Corporate performance 8. Packaging All of the criteria used in EPEAT are contained in ANSI-approved public standards. (The standard currently implemented in EPEAT is IEEE , covering PCs and PC displays. For more information about IEEE standards and their development visit

5 What do the different EPEAT levels mean?
Products must meet all required criteria to qualify for EPEAT. Products are rated Bronze, Silver or Gold based on how many optional criteria they meet. EPEAT includes both required and optional criteria. (The PC/PC display category, for example, includes 23 required and 28 optional criteria.) Products must meet all of the required criteria in their category to qualify for registration, and are rated EPEAT Bronze, EPEAT Silver or EPEAT Gold based on how many of the optional criteria they meet. Bronze rating: meets all required criteria Silver rating: meets all required criteria plus at least 50% of the optional criteria Gold rating: meets all required criteria plus at least 75% of the optional criteria Including optional criteria and flexibility to attain them is intended to foster innovation and enable OEMs to play to their strengths. Green Greener Greenest

6 How is EPEAT different from ENERGY STAR®?
ENERGY STAR covers energy efficiency. EPEAT is a more comprehensive measure of reduced environmental impact than ENERGY STAR. EPEAT’s environmental criteria cover the complete product lifecycle EPEAT-registered products meet anywhere from in addition to the latest Energy Star standard. EPEAT is a more comprehensive measure of reduced environmental impact than ENERGY STAR. For example, all EPEAT-registered products in the PC/PC display category must meet the latest ENERGY STAR specifications as well as 21 to 42 additional criteria governing materials used, product longevity, end-of-life management, packaging and corporate performance. With EPEAT, customers get ENERGY STAR consumption and cost savings plus a wide array of other environmental benefits. For more information about ENERGY STAR see: Energystar.gov 21 to 48 other rigorous criteria For more info: Energystar.gov

7 Why is EPEAT the definitive green electronics registry?
Comprehensive Transparent Clear criteria designed to complement country-specific requirements - With more than 3,000 products from more than 45 manufacturers in 41 countries, EPEAT has rapidly become the most comprehensive green electronics registry in existence. EPEAT strives to be as transparent as possible. Full product registration data, all verification requirements, plans and outcomes reports, and lists of standard development participants are all publicly available. In addition, EPEAT Board of Advisors meetings are open to the public. - EPEAT provides a clear set of voluntary performance criteria for product design. Performance criteria are designed to complement and go beyond existing international and national requirements. The user-friendly system allows you search by product, criteria, geographic region and more. A toolkit, PR support, training and regular updates are available to our Channel Partners. 8 What are the potential benefits of selling EPEAT registered products?
Enhance company reputation Attract and retain environmentally minded customers Gain access to contracts and purchasers who require EPEAT Lend further credibility to products you sell—those designed with the environment in mind - Enhance company reputation by aligning yourself with a credible, multi-stakeholder environmental initiative. Attract new customers—and improve your ability to retain existing customers—with products that have less of an environmental impact than those not registered in EPEAT. Gain access to the significant market of purchasers in all sectors who require or prefer EPEAT in their contracts. To date, EPEAT has been an official resource in procurement commitments worth $65 billion. Promoting EPEAT-registered products lends additional credibility to products you already sell—those designed with the environment in mind.

9 What are the potential benefits of buying EPEAT registered products?
Purchasers who use EPEAT to guide purchasing decisions can: Reduce their environmental impact and potentially their energy costs Make informed decisions and choose products that reflect their values Customers can reduce their environmental impact and potentially their energy costs by choosing EPEAT-registered products.1 -All products on the registry must meet the latest technical specifications of ENERGY STAR®, so your electronics are designed for energy efficiency.2 -By reducing power consumption in operation, you can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and potentially lower your energy bill. 2 EPEAT-registered electronics have quantifiable benefits across a range of environmental factors. EPEAT addresses all phases of the product lifecycle including materials use, solid waste, emissions and recycling. 3 Registered products reflect reduction in the use of toxic materials and production of hazardous waste. -The Electronics Environmental Benefits Calculator helps you measure and report on the environmental impact and potential cost savings of customer purchases.3 EPEAT also enables customers to make informed decisions and choose the electronics that reflect their environmental values. -Using EPEAT’s online product comparison tool is a smart way to evaluate products that offer environmental benefits. Compare product environmental criteria side by side, and help customers make informed decisions that support their sustainability goals. -Because product performance claims are subject to verification at any time and the EPEAT criteria are updated regularly, you can assure customers that their purchases reflect current and comprehensive environmental standards.  1. In comparison to products that do not meet the EPEAT criteria 2. Energy consumption during use phase is an important aspect of computers’ and monitors’ overall environmental performance. For this reason, the IEEE 1680 Standard, which forms the basis of EPEAT, requires that every EPEAT-registered product meet the current version of the applicable ENERGY STAR® standard. For more details on ENERGY STAR, see 3. Supported by US EPA, the University of Tennessee Center for Clean Products developed an Electronics Environmental Benefits Calculator (EEBC), which allows purchasers or other parties to calculate the lifecycle environmental benefits from the purchase of EPEAT-registered computers and monitors by product type and tier. For details, see Make progress toward their environmental goals Be recognized as EPEAT Purchasing Partners

10 How does a product make it onto the registry?
Manufacturers declare the specific criteria that their product meets, and participate in an ongoing verification process after registration. To register products in EPEAT, a manufacturer commits to: Make accurate declarations Participate in independent verification Correct any inaccuracies discovered through verification Manufacturers sign a contract (Subscriber Agreement) that commits them to providing accurate information—and to taking remedial action if inaccuracies are discovered during verification. They then register each product by declaring that it meets specific criteria. To ensure these self-declarations are credible, a rigorous verification process includes random and targeted testing carried out by independent experts on electronics and the environment, contracted by EPEAT and trained in EPEAT verification policies and procedures. All findings are reviewed by a Product Verification Committee comprised of additional experts who are blind to the companies and products under review. Any nonconformance with a product declaration is published in a verification outcomes report. These reports include manufacturer and product names and are made available to all interested parties. The policy of public disclosure of any nonconformance goes a long way to ensuring manufacturers carefully vet and manage their declarations.
