ArcelorMittal Recycling of Advanced High Strength Steel Concept Proposal Corey Tokar, Austin Sigler, Robert Patrick, Rashid Obaid

2 Our Proposed Initial Concept Ideas
Pre-Separation of Automotive Parts at Scrapyard Pig Iron and Slag Recycling Method Using the Mass Spectrometry Technique Using Melting Points to Separate Alloy Metals

3 1.) Pre-Separate Automotive Parts
Pre-separate the materials at scrapyard Eliminates amount of unneeded scrap Makes for a faster high alloy steel separation process Saves time and money by not using advanced techniques Manual labor would be used to separate car parts Less harm would be caused to steel quality

4 2.) Pig Iron/Steel Recycling
Pig iron would be worked into steel. Pig iron is melted and a strong current of air is directed over it while it is being stirred or agitated Causes the dissolved impurities (such as silicon) to be thoroughly oxidized. More slag formers are introduced and more oxygen is blown into the bath This burns out impurities such as silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, aluminium, manganese, and calcium, and removing their oxides to the slag. Using an Electric Arc furnace, Pig Iron is blasted with slag in order to create a higher quality steel.

5 3.) Mass Spectrometry Technique
Follows basic principles of electromagnetism The magnetic field curves the ions based upon their unique charge to mass ratio Different elements/ compounds will end up at different locations

6 4.) Separation By Melting Points
Alloys put together in air-tight mixer Mixer heats to different temperatures based on melting points Melted metals separate from alloy and are transported using gravity

7 Snapshot of Design Matrices
Criteria/ requirements Separate alloy from scrap Scrap cycle management Avoid off chemistry steel Material usage Energy usage Total for each row WF for each row = total of row/sum of row 1 4 0.4 2 0.2 3 0.3 0.1 Sum of Totals Sum of WFs = 100%
