5. Belief Statements
I believe that students have an innate desire to learn.
I believe that learning occurs when an individual can make a meaningful and personal connections to what they feel is important to learn.
I believe that teaching is the action of a teacher to allow students to create an interest in topics and to develop new ideas.
I believe that without the support of those around them (family involvement), students will have a difficult time learning.
I believe that most people are not organized because they are naturally procrastinators and that they need to use tools to overcome this tendency.

Students learn from the very beginning of their life, birth.
Students have the same basic needs: wanting to be loved and accepted, wanting power, wanting to feel safe.
Students learn those things that are interesting to them and those interests change with time.
Students are basically the same in their actions and needs until experiences in their lives change how they behave.

7. Narrative
The human race would not have survived without the innate desire to learn. Children, being human, will, with the help of teachers and family, gain the ability to look at the world beyond the primal need to survive. Children begin learning from birth and continue to learn throughout their lives. For example, acceptance is a strong motivator. In the same way we all struggle with the natural tendency to gain power over others and the world. Within a few weeks after birth, an infant in their crib knows how to get what they want. Experiences, parents, and teachers help students understand power by giving them ideas of how to gain and use wisely through responsible action. The desire to be loved and accepted by family and friends come before independence. As children develop, their interests change over time. As they work toward their own personal fulfillment, they struggle with their behaviors. It is the role of the family to support them as they develop. Our actions reflected our basic needs.
