2. How does this empire fit the class definition? The Tokugawa dynasty fits the class definition of empire because it has a local lords who are in control of a vast area of land. Samurai were depended on to settle disputes with other lords and defend the land. In addition, the Tokugawa had a strong centralized government.

3. Origins of the Tokugawa Empire In the late 1500s,Tokugawa Ieyasu ended the age of warring states with the help of two other powerful Daimyo and united Japan. In 1603 he became a shogun and started his own dynasty.

4. Development of the empire F irst, they established a strong and centralized government. Then they curbed the daimyo’s power by creating a special police to root out opposition, they restricted samurai movement and sent the daimyo and their families to live in edo as virtual hostages.

Tokugawa Decline The Tokugawa started opening trade to western goods but some people started to convert to christianity so they closed foreign trade and isolated themselves from the western world so the country could not develop. Which made them weaker than other countries so the United States forced Japan into foreign trade.
