2 Justinian Justinian came to rule in 527 He sent his army to capture territory In 16 years, he had controlled the entire Roman Empire

5 Justinian Code Justinian put together a panel to ‘update’ the old Roman Laws into a unified law Called Justinian Code Had four works:

6 Justinian Code 1) The Code Contained 5,000 Roman laws that were still considered useful 2) The Digest summarized the opinions of Rome’s greatest thinkers 3) The Institute was a textbook that told law students how to use the laws 4) The Novellae (New Laws) presented legislation passed after 534

7 Constantinople While Justinian was waiting for the Code to be created, he began rebuilding the city of Constantinople He built a 14-mile long wall along its coastline His crowning glory was the Hagia Sophia, which means “Holy Wisdom”

9 Theodora In 525, Theodora married Justinian She was the most powerful woman in Byzantine history She worked hard for more rights for women
