1 Pulaski County Special School District Emergency Response Chart Training Division of Equity and Pupil Services In an Emergency remain calm, refer to the level and follow the directions.

2 Level 1 – Intruder Situations All visitors are considered intruders until office visitors pass is secured.

3 Level 2 - Fire A fire occurs in the building or the fire alarm sounds.  Notify principal or designee. If the fire alarm has not sounded, activate the alarm manually.  If the fire alarm has sounded:  Take your grade book and ask students to take with them anything that is easily accessible.

4 Level 2 – Fire Continued  Check the evacuation route posted in the room by the primary exit where students are located.  The secretary will close all vaults and secure necessary records.  Close all doors, windows and turn off lights.

5  Exit from the building quickly and quietly.  Move at least fifty feet from the building.  Verify attendance of all students under your supervision.  Wait for all-clear signal to return to the building. Level 2 – Fire Continued

6 Tornados, Thunderstorms A tornado watch or severe thunderstorm warning received during school hours.  The principal or designee may notify staff in school.  Teachers will continue regular classroom activities. Level 3 – Weather, Severe Situation

7  School will dismiss at the normal hour in the regular manner; but drivers will follow regular routes using due caution.  Review school procedures for establishing safe areas. Level 3 – Weather, Severe Situation Continued

8  If there is not a warning, but a tornado is sighted approaching the school, the principal or designee will direct all persons to proceed as follows: If time permits, take classes to designated area(s). Level 3 – Weather, Severe Situation Continued

9 If time does not permit:  Go to the nearest enclosed hallway, not to open corridors.  Avoid open spaces and outside hallways  Avoid areas with large roof expanse such as the gymnasium, cafeteria or auditorium. Level 3 – Weather, Severe Situation Continued

10 A tornado warning stating that a tornado has actually been sighted.  The principal or designee will receive this warning by way of radio tuned to the weather channel, a call from the Superintendent or designee, a call from law enforcement, or the Civil Defense Office. Level 3 – Weather, Severe Situation Continued

11  The principal will inform the staff.  Staff and students will immediately proceed to the area predetermined by the school and assume a protective position to best protect the face and head.  Teachers will take roll and notify the principal or designee if anyone is missing. Level 3 – Weather, Severe Situation Continued

12  The secretary will close all vaults and secure necessary records.  All qualified personnel will render first aid, when necessary.  Staff and students will not return to their classrooms until the principal or designee declares an all-clear. Level 3 – Weather, Severe Situation Continued

13 An earthquake has occurred of sufficient magnitude to be felt.  Remain in the room and place students under their desks until the earthquake is over.  Evacuate the building via fire evacuation routes.  Check for injuries and call roll.  Stay away from all structures, power lines, or gas mains. Level 4 - Earthquake

14  Notify principal or designee.  Remain calm, avoid heroics, don’t threaten.  Keep a safe, non-intimidating distance. Level 5 - Weapons

15 Shooting Inside Building  Remain in room.  Lock/Secure door.  Take cover under desk and lie flat. Level 5 – Weapons Continued

16 Shooting Outside Building  Take cover, if cover is available.  If no cover, hit ground. Move to safety when it appears safe.  Contact police. Level 5 - Weapons Continued

17 Level 6 – Bombing or Bomb Threat A bomb threat has been called into the school or a bomb has exploded.  Notify the principal or designee. Follow designated school and district procedures. They will provide any direction you need.

18 Level 6 – Bombing or Bomb Threat Continued If you are asked to evacuate:  Leave lights on.  Do not lock doors.  Take your student roster.

19 Level 7 – Child Missing, Abducted A student should be released from school only to custodial parents or guardians designated on the student’s school record. If a student is missing from campus:  Notify the principal or designee of missing student. They will provide any direction you need.

20 Level 7 – Child Missing, Abducted Continued  Be prepared to provide the principal or designee with as much information as possible such as name, sex, race, age, grade, physical description, distinguishing marks, etc.

21 Level 8 – Gas Leaks, Hazardous Spills A hazardous spill or gas leak has occurred and poses a potential health threat. Spill inside the building:  Notify principal or designee. They will provide any direction you need.

22 Level 8 – Gas Leaks, Hazardous Spills Continued If you are asked to evacuate:  Leave lights on.  Do not lock doors.  Take your grade book, and ask students to take with them anything that is easily accessible (e.g. book bags).

23 Level 8 – Gas Leaks, Hazardous Spills Continued  Evacuate the building via fire evacuation routes.  Take alternate route if spill or leak is in your area.  Call roll.

24 Level 8 – Gas Leaks, Hazardous Spills Spill outside the building:  Remain in your classroom.  Close windows and doors.  Block airflow into room and under doors.  Turn off air conditioner/heater, if possible.  Remain in classroom for further instructions.

25 Level 9 – Violent Situations A threat to the safety of teachers, staff, or students has occurred.  Notify principal or designee.

26 Level 9 – Violent Situations Continued When dealing with a violent individual, the following actions should be considered:  Be empathetic.  Clarify messages.  Respect personal space.  Be aware of body position.  Permit verbal venting when possible.  Set and enforce reasonable limits.

27 Level 9 – Violent Situations Continued  Avoid overeacting. Remain calm, rational, and professional.  Use physical techniques as a last resort.  Ignore challenge questions.  Keep your nonverbal cues non-threatening.

28 LEVEL 10 – CLASSROOM, HALLWAY EMERGENCY A threat to the safety of teachers or students has occurred.  If the problem is in the hallway, take students in classrooms for immediate sheltering or to insure the situation does not escalate.  Lock doors.  Close windows and blinds.

29 LEVEL 10 – CLASSROOM, HALLWAY EMERGENCY Continued  Ignore all bells.  Immediately notify the principal or designee. Use the intercom in your classroom or send a responsible student messenger to the office or a nearby teacher’s room.  Take appropriate actions to take care of the students at the scene.

30 LEVEL 11 – REVERSE EVACUATION An emergency has occurred that requires students to move immediately into the school.  When pre-arranged signal is given, move students into the building and into their classrooms.  Call roll.  Remain in classroom until all-clear signal is given.
