3. Problem Definition Today everyone uses mobile phones and mobile applications became important parts of our lives. There are different applications from games to solving specific problems of users. Since smart phones are much more available and handy than computers in terms of speed and usability, it is faster to do most of easy operations such as checking emails, schedules, events and etc. on smart phones.

4. Problem Definition (cont’d) In our university, especially the students face with different issues when they are using their mobile phones to check: the website of the university, OASIS, communications among others, and so on.

Problem I Desktop version of OASIS is not very usable on mobile phones: o When you save your user id and password then click login, your pin code and text typing field is appeared with your id and password on some browsers. o You need to zoom in all the time when you want to read something clearly. o Most of the students use OASIS to check their weekly schedules and grades. There is not a single screen that shows weekly schedule. To see a weekly schedule, one need to click schedule button, then click course schedule, then click print my schedule, and it opens as a file in adobe. This is definitely inefficient. As for grades, it is more accessible than seeing a weekly schedule but it is slow and requires zoom in, doesn’t fit for small screen. o When you want to request a document from Student Affairs department, you need to use OASIS to select your document. This button is resides under monitor button. It can be make more accessible and visible for new users.

Problem II There is not an IUE Webmail interface for mobile phones. o You either need to link your webmail account with another email account such as a Hotmail or Gmail account or you need to add IUE webmail account by configuring it with outgoing and incoming server names. This is inefficient for most users don’t even know the server names. o When you login on desktop version, you need to again zoom in, and out for most of the operations. It can work better and faster with a suitable interface optimized for mobile phones.

10. Problem III When the students are new, they do not know much about the campus, toilets, offices of the instructors, and etc. They ask for help from others especially about the offices of the instructors and assistants.

11. Prblem IV Students are creating events by preparing some posters on the boards inside campus or using generally Facebook or some other websites to make their announcements. Similarly IEU staff use IUE website to announce important events, conferences within IUE campus or other places. Additionally they send emails about these events to the students. (These events may be meetings, conferences, parties, celebrating, and etc.) However some people do not use Facebook or check website and emails all the time for event announcements. So that they may not be aware of what kind of events are happening every day.

12. Problem V There is a common problem among research assistants of the university: midterm/final/make-up exam proctoring. They get a list which includes for when and which exam they are going to be proctor. However sometimes they may not be available for doing the job, so that they may want to swap the duty with others. For example let’s say Research Assistant A has something important to do on 10 th April but he has a proctor duty on that day. Research Assistant B has an exam on 11 th April and he has to do something else. If these two people can find each other and agree to swap their duties, they may be happier with the job. Usually they talk to each other if they know each other or by coincidence to overcome this issue.

18. Proposed System There will be mainly 4 or 5 modules on the main screen of the application. o OASIS o Webmail o Campus Map o Event Creating o Exam Proctoring

Proposed System (cont’d)  For OASIS problem, there will be a mobile version of OASIS as a module.  All the menus will be optimized for the screen resolution; therefore there will not be any zooming issues.  Weekly schedule  document requests  grades screens  will be on the foreground and easy to access.

Proposed System (cont’d)  For IEU Webmail problem, there will be a mobile version of Webmail as a module with a usable user interface.  There will be a module to show all the campus as a map including instructor offices, distinct departments, toilets, and all other areas.  An event creating module will be available and everyone can see all the events within the university by filtering the topics and sign up for them.

21. Proposed System (cont’d)  Exam proctoring module can be designed for research assistants and appointed lecturers.  They can post information about exams if they cannot attend so that they can swap their duties.
