1 ICSU ROA Science Plans: call for individual, institutional, corporate and national participation Dear Colleagues: These slides show the chronology of the preparation of our 4 Science Plans (to be published and disseminated in June 2007) and future plans to register success histories in the application of science, research, technology and innovation in Africa. We are now calling for your individual, institutional, corporate, and national active and productive participation in the formulation and implementation of the projects/research areas embodied in the 4 Science Plans. Kindly go through all the 4 slides (power point presentation), indicate your interest/choice and register your names (plus 1-page CV, maximum length) as suggested in the slides. 2 01 April 2005 Establishment of ICSU Regional Office for Africa (ICSU ROA) 1 st Meeting of the ICSU Regional Committee for Africa (ICSU RCA) June 2005 ICSU ROA Business Plan 2005/6 approved by ICSU RCA & NRF September 2005 Launch of the ICSU ROA at the NRF Grounds in Pretoria just after the 2 nd meeting of the ICSU RCA January 2006  ICSU RCA approves the establishment of Scoping Groups to prepare Science Plans on each of the 4 selected areas.  Point of departure for the exercise: the ICSU Strategic Plan 2006-2011, relevant ICSU documents and ongoing initiatives on similar subjects, within the ICSU community and African priorities  Generic Terms of Reference (ToR) for the four Scoping Groups, including specific ToR for the individual Planning Groups were drawn by ICSU RCA June 2006 Submission of Draft Science Plans to ICSU ROA July 2006 Submission of Draft Science Plans to ICSU RCA by the Chairs of the Scoping Groups at the 4 th Meeting of the ICSU RCA in Nairobi August 2005 At the 2nd meeting of the ICSU RCA the following priority areas for the ICSU ROA were approved: Sustainable Energy, Health and Human Well-Being, Natural and Human-Induced Hazards and Disasters, and Global Change April 2006 1 st Meetings of the Scoping Groups Sustainable Energy Health and Human Well-being Hazards and Disasters Global Change May/June 2006 2 nd Meeting of the Scoping Groups Sustainable Energy Health and Human Well-being Hazards & Disasters Global Change

3 August 2006 Refining of the Science Plans for discussion at the 2 nd Regional Forum (Africa) September 2006 Draft Science Plans discussed at the Regional Consultative Forum with broad representation from across Africa 3 rd meeting of the Scoping Groups to finalise Draft Science Plans according to input and comment emanating from the Regional Forum March 2007 Submission and presentation of final drafts at the 5th Meeting of the ICSU RCA in Seychelles Approval of the Draft Science Plans by the ICSU RCA April – December 2007 Implementation Strategy: Publication and dissemination of Science Plans Formation of Task Teams for preparing fundable project proposals Building databases and networks of implementers Solicitation of funding for projects January 2008 Commencement of implementation of the first funded projects

4 ICSU ROA Science Plans on: (i) Sustainable Energy and (ii) Global Change (i) Sustainable Energy topics/project areas: (a) Development of energy models and scenarios for sub-Saharan Africa, (b) Increase in access to high quality, reliable and affordable energy, (c) Strengthening and retention of human and institutional capacities in the energy sector. (ii) Global Change topics/projects areas: (a) Land degradation, biodiversity loss and human well-being in sub-Saharan Africa, (b) Rainfall, (c) Resilience of food systems, (d) Water resources and their governance, (e) Atmospheric pollution (f) Africa’s oceanographic uniqueness.
