2 What is official use? Between places of official business Between places of temporary lodging Travel status: – Restaurants, drug stores, barber shops, places of worship, cleaning establishments, and similar places necessary for sustenance, comfort, or heath of employee – NOT for entertainment

3 Public Perception Issues Speeding or reckless driving Road rage Careful where you choose to park (bars, etc.) Display of personal items Sloppy packing Excessively dirty (inside or out)

4 Use while driving is prohibited Do NOT operate cell phone, iPod, GPS, laptop, camera or any other electronic device while driving Do NOT answer an incoming call if you are driving Use passenger or pull off at next safe location If you have an accident while using your phone you are liable for accident related expenses Policy on electronic devices

5 Research has found: 28% of crashes are cell phone related 4 times more likely to crash while talking on cell phone 8-23 times more likely to crash while texting 37% reduction in brain activity while driving due to talking on the phone

6 Other BIG no-no’s Transporting – Drugs or Alcohol – Non-Forest Service personnel – Animals Driving after drinking or drugs Vehicle to private residence Towing, winching, or pulling non-FS vehicles Unofficial use of radios Negligent use – walk the last mile, use a spotter

7 WEX card Where can I use it? – Just about any major gas station chain – Some repair shops – Always check BEFORE incurring charges How do I use it? – PIN – mileage What do I do if vendor won’t accept it? – Call number on back of card – Call Craig

8 Inspections Once per month or after each major trip Report/repair all damage and maintenance issues immediately Chains, fire extinguisher, 1 st aid kit, saws for emergency use Your vehicle is the only thing between you and a long hike in the dark

9 In the field Always wear seatbelts Stop every 2 hours for a break Slow down Walk the last mile (or two) Always use spotters 4-wheel drive Be aware of changing conditions Lights on, windows cracked, radio low Stay awake – passengers too!

10 Accidents Never, ever admit fault Check for injuries Call police or LEO, even for minor accidents Discuss only with police, state the facts Accident packs in vehicles Call supervisor as soon as possible
