3 EQ How did increased trade change life in medieval Europe?

4 Trade declined when the Roman Empire fell. Roads and bridges fell into ruin, law and order disappeared. 1100’s Europe safer, more goods and food. Population increased. Nobles seek luxury items from the East. (Silk & Spices)

5 Cities grew wealthy. Venice, Pisa & Genoa built fleets. Controlled the Medit. trade. Flanders (Belgium) trade center of the North. (Wool) Trade fairs – Fur, tin, honey & wool. Silk, sugar & spices Merchants wanted gold & silver – banks opened.

7 Cities and trade created a middle class of merchants, bankers, and artisans. Only men were considered citizens, and set up city councils with officials to make laws and judges. Nobles often owned the territory of the city and taxed the townspeople. Townspeople wanted freedom.

9 Craftspeople organized into guilds (groups). Guilds set prices & quality standards. An apprentice would work for a Master Artisan.

11 Cities were surrounded by stone walls. Candles and fire were used for heat and light. There was smoke and ash in the air and open sewers, which created an unhealthy environment. Women kept the house and cared for the children.
