Mathem(AT)ics: Integrating AT in Mathematics Dr. Tara Jeffs Dr. Cindy Feist Assistive Technology Trainers Loudoun County Public Schools

Let’s explore a variety of low to high tech math strategies, created with Microsoft Office Suite, free Internet downloads, or other inexpensive materials to provide access to math curricula for all students.

Awakening the Learner Peeking at the Payoff The Word on Word Excelling in Excel The Power of PowerPoint Wait …There’s More to Explore The Low Down on Low Tech Wrapping it Up Today’s Overview

Learning preferences – visual, auditory, verbal, physical (tactile/kinesthetic) Gross and fine motor skills Sensory function – vision, hearing, touch, movement Cognition Language and communication skills Literacy skills (reading and writing) Attention and organizational skills

Providing access to all learners supports Universal Design for Learning principles: “Multiple means of representation, to give learners various ways of acquiring information and knowledge, Multiple means of expression, to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating what they know, and Multiple means of engagement, to tap into learners' interests, offer appropriate challenges, and increase motivation.” http://www.cast.org/research/udl/index.html

Universal Design for Learning 3 Brain Networks Ensures Recognition Networks Ensures Strategic Networks Ensures Affective Networks Explore text to speech programs to read word problems Use Touch Math cubes to demonstrate math operations Show multiple ways in which data can be represented in Excel (i.e. Pictogram, pie chart, bar graph, etc) Multiple Means of Representation [What] Create a foldable to demonstrate comprehension of math concepts Form Jeopardy teams and play math Jeopardy Complete self-checking worksheet on multiplication Multiple Means of Expression [How] Provide customized graph paper for math practice Develop file folder activities for students to practice newly acquired math skills Create shoebox tasks to give students extra practice as needed Multiple Means of Engagement [Why]

UDL provides an intersection for learning initiatives

The Word on Word

Adapted Learning Materials Create adapted lessons, worksheets, quizzes, and other learning materials for students to independently access and manipulate. Word tools: Item banks Tables Sound recordings Templates

Instructional Applications Allows students to display their knowledge by moving objects, clip art, and images around in a document instead of drawing, writing, or cutting and pasting on a hard copy. Worksheets Tests Quizzes Interactive classroom activities - great for interactive white boards Place 25 cents in the piggy bank. Graphic from www.timtim.comwww.timtim.com

Create a visual bank of objects for students to drag and drop in a Word document. Objects can also be moved by using the arrow keys on the keyboard.

Copy a picture, clip art, or other object as many times as will be needed and select each object. Picture Tools Format tab, select Align > Align Selected Objects and Align Center. Again, select Align > Align Middle. Let’s create an item bank!

Create tables to make customized graph paper. Size and colors of cells, columns, and rows can be customized for visual and physical accessibility.

Let’s create some graph paper!

Item banks of points and lines can be dragged onto the coordinates of the x, y axes on the graph. Item banks

Instructional Applications Allows students who may have difficulty writing to verbally record answers into a Word document. Allows teachers to record verbal prompts into a Word document for students who may need auditory directions. Worksheets Tests Instructional aides

Creates a WAV sound file that can be recorded and edited directly in the Word document (for Windows XP and earlier versions). Insert tab > Create new tab > Object > Wave Sound Multiple WAV files can be inserted directly into a document.

For Windows 7 and Vista Programs > Accessories > Sound Recorder After making recording, save it and then insert it into your Word document. Insert tab > Object > Create from file tab and Browse to find your saved recording file.

Creates a copy of the original document each time the template is opened. Allows students to manipulate the document and save their work WITHOUT being able to change the original document. Templates are identified by.dotx File > Save as > Word Template

Instructional Applications - Allows teachers to create documents that students cannot change. Provides an electronic copy of the student’s work. - Provides students with a framework to complete assignments. Students can focus on entering content instead of focusing on organizing their responses. Worksheets Tests Projects Instructional aides

The Power of PowerPoint

Instructional Applications - Allows students to interact with information in a variety of ways including text, graphics, animation, video, and sound. Multimedia! - Allows students to choose their sequence of learning or receive reinforcement during activities through the use of hyperlinking. - Allows teachers to easily create tangible instructional materials. Interactive learning menus Jeopardy-style games Choose your own adventures Adapted books Instructional aides/printables http://www.schenectady.k12.ny.us/users/title3/Future%20Grant%20Projects/math68.htm

PowerPoint: Hyperlinking Jeopardy and Millionaire games are created by hyperlinking text to slides within the presentation. Action buttons hyperlink slides to home slides. http://elainefitzgerald.com/jeopardy.htm http://teach.fcps.net/trt14/Power%20Point%20Ga mes/power_point_games.htm

Slides can be hyperlinked so that when text, graphics, or action buttons are hovered over or clicked on, it will display another slide within the presentation, a website, or another document.

Each shape is hyperlinked to a slide in the presentation (Place In This Document)

How to Create a PPT Action ButtonAction Button On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, select the Shapes button. In the menu that appears, select an Action Button. Click and drag to create the button on the slide. In the dialog box that appears, select Hyperlink to, and from the drop-down menu, select the slide to hyperlink to. To play a sound, select the Play sound check box, and then select the sound that you want to play from the drop- down menu. Select OK. When the presentation is in Slide Show view mode, the action buttons will be active.

Let’s create a PowerPoint math quiz!
