2 President Coolidge was Pro-Business What does “pro-business” mean? –Keep taxes down for business – have more in their pocket to invest in business (buy more land, hirer more workers, etc) –Keep government interference low (laissez- faire type policies: opposite of Communism) –Increase tariffs (helped support American business)

3 Business Boom: Automobile Industry The Impact of the Automobile –New roads must be built – Route 66 (travel from Chicago to California on one road) –Houses came with garages –Construction of gas stations, repair shops, motels, tourist camps, shopping centers –Farming families could drive to the cities for shopping, etc. –Allowed families to vacation in new places –Contributing to urban sprawl (cities spreading outside the city center)

5 Airplane Industry First transatlantic flight by Charles Lindbergh in 1927 Pan American Airways founded in 1927 – passenger service With cars and planes….what about railroads???

6 Farming Industry With new machinery, farmers were producing more food than was needed This made the price of food decrease (large supply, low demand) Lots of “supply” to sell – seller will sell for a lower price to make some money
