1 State of Georgia BASIC FIRE FIGHTER TRAINING COURSE
SPRINKLERS

2 Automatic Sprinkler Effectiveness
Most reliable form of fixed fire protection Rarely fail to operate There never has been a multiple death in a fully operational sprinklered building 70% of all fires are controlled by activation of five or fewer heads Less interruption of business and less water damage Enhances life safety Sprinklers

3 How Automatic Sprinklers Enhance Life Safety
Water is discharged directly on the fire The fire is usually controlled while it is in the incipient (growth) stage Products of combustion are limited Sprinklers help prevent fire spread Occupants feel safer in a sprinklered building thus reducing the likelihood of panic Sprinklers

4 AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER Components

5 SPRINKLER HEAD Parts Sprinklers

6 TYPES of MAIN CONTROL VALVES Outside Screw & Yoke (OS&Y)
Remove lock using bolt cutters if necessary Turn valve clockwise to close Stem fully β€œIN” indicates the valve is closed Reverse the procedure to open valve stem is out when fully open Sprinklers

7 TYPES of MAIN CONTROL VALVES Post Indicating Valve (PIV)
Remove lock using bolt cutters if necessary remove operating handle place operating handle horizontal on operating nut operate handle clockwise to close valve SHUT appears in view window Reverse the procedure to open the valve OPEN appears in the view window Sprinklers

8 TYPES of MAIN CONTROL VALVES Wall Post Indicating Valve (WPIV)
Remove lock using bolt cutters if necessary Operate hand wheel clockwise to close the valve SHUT appears in view window Reverse the procedure to open the valve OPEN appears in view window Sprinklers

9 MAIN DRAIN VALVES Sprinklers

12 SPRINKLER SYSTEMS Operation
Fire starts, heat builds up Sprinkler head activates Water flow alarm sounds Fire department is notified and responds Fire department connects to sprinkler connection Sprinklers

13 SPRINKLER SYSTEMS Controlling Water
Using two sprinkler wedges Insert two wooden wedges, one from each side, between the discharge orifice and the deflector Use the heel of hand to drive wedge in place A commercial stop may also be used Notify the owner so that authorized and trained person can restore the system Sprinklers
