1 CHANGES TO THE LEVEL 4 CERTIFICATE THE 6502 CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING NOVEMBER 2013
2 THE 6502 QUALIFICATIONS Level 3 Award in Education and Training Available now to existing centres, through fast track approvalLevel 4 Certificate in Education and TrainingandLevel 5 Diploma in Education and TrainingAvailable for delivery from 1st January 2014Fast track approval for existing centres and qualification information will be available from 1st December 2013
5 TO ACHIEVE THE LEVEL 4 CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING …. Candidates must achieve a minimum of 36 credits21 credits must be achieved from the mandatory unitsPlus a minimum of 15 credits from optional unitsA minimum of 21 credits must be at Level 4 or above, therefore a minimum of 3 optional credits must be at level 4
6 Mandatory unitsThere are five mandatory units. 7 optional unitsOptional units There are 38 optional units available at levels 3, 4 and 5 As achievement of the Certificate requires that a minimum of 21 credits must be at Level 4, a minimum of 3 optional credits must be at level 4. 9 Staffing requirements Staff delivering these qualifications should have all of the following:A teaching or training qualification *Evidence of relevant teaching experience in an education or training contextAccess to appropriate guidance and support, and,On-going participation in related programme quality assurance processes* This does not include qualifications that only provide an introduction to teaching, for example the Level 3 Award in Education and Training or the Level 3 or Level 4 PTLLS awards.
10 Staffing requirements Additionally, for the L&D units, staff mustHave up-to-date working knowledge and experience of best practice in L&D.Be occupationally competent in what they are assessing.Hold a recognised assessor qualification.Have evidence of CPD activitiesThose undertaking observations of practice mustBe full members of the centre team, contributing to team and standardisation meetings etc.New team members must:Receive adequate induction, mentoring and monitoring for internal and external quality assurance purposes.There are additional requirements for those delivering the specialist optional units
11 Observation of teaching practice The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training has a minimum practice requirement of 30 hoursThere are three mandatory observations; observations should be appropriately spaced to take account of a trainee’s progressThe three mandatory observations must be linked to the following Level 4 mandatory units:Delivering education and trainingAssessing learners in education and trainingUsing resources for education and trainingAll observations must meet the required standard of practice
12 Grading of observed practice Observations must now be graded in accordance with Ofsted’s guidelines. At least one hour of observed and assessed practice, in observations linked to the mandatory units, should demonstrate grade 2 characteristics. Any observations graded 4 (inadequate) should not be included in the total number of assessed observations, but should be recorded and developmental feedback provided to the trainee teacher/trainer. Some optional units have a requirement for observed practice. These must be in addition to the three mandatory observations.

15 ASSIGNMENT FORMATMost units require the demonstration of underpinning knowledge, practical application and evaluation or reflection.The assignments have been written to incorporate these main approaches to assessmentThe assignment for Unit 403 Assessing learners in education and training, requires learners to:produce an investigative report, which allows them to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of assessment purposes, methods and procedures, through reading and research and then writing academicallyAdd evidence to their Portfolio of Teaching EvidenceEvaluate their own strengths and areas for development, and produce an action plan.Suggested answers are provided in the Answer Pack. The answers provided are not exhaustive but indicate the type of content required.
