1 Student Activities Centralized Training
Session 5 Hedgehog Concept Joël Primeau, Québec City, Canada

2 Leading in 3 simple steps
Purpose Mastery Autonomy The intent is to illustrate the overall structure of ASHRAE with a very general explanation – estimate is 2-3 minutes

3 PURPOSE Establishing a purpose for your team will be challenging…
Millenials, who constitute the vast majority of SA chapter teams, were raised on being told why… telling them “just because” is not good enough.

4 HEDGEHOG VS FOX Philosopher Isaiah Berlin wrote a simple essay about the hedgehog and the fox

5 HEDGEHOG VS FOX Jim Collins took Berlin’s idea and uses it to explain that corporations, teams or individuals who behave like a hedgehog do better than those who behave like a fox… He develops the Hedgehog Concept Check out the hedgehog videos on youtube Pretty much like the MBOs!

6 The Fox The survival of a fox depends on numerous strategies, skills,… knowing what you can kill, what can kill you, where to hide if attacked, how to attack various preys,…

7 The Hedgehog The survival of a hedgehog depends mostly on a single strategy: “when attacked, roll up in a ball and let the pricks protect you”

8 Hedgehog or Fox? Corporations, teams, individuals who can simplify their survival or more to the point, their success into a simple “hedgehog concept” will do better than Foxes!

9 My golf swing… If I can remember all 25 things I need to know at the nanosecond I hit the ball, I’m doing great… but if I can find the one thing that makes everything else works… I’d be a better golfer…

10 Corporations’ hedgehog concept
Disney Southwest Airlines Walgreens General Electric Fedex They all have successful hedgehog concepts

11 What is yours? Individually, do you know what one thing you need to do to make you a success? Have you ever wondered about it? Do you know anyone with hedgehog concepts? Think about successful people you know…

12 Finding your hedgehog concept…

13 Individual exercise… 3 lists: What are you passionate about?
What could you be the best at? What would people pay you to do? Get ready to discuss it with everyone Give folks 3-4 minutes to write it out… then share their findings with others.

14 How I use this… BTW… I use this all the time with high school students who don’t know what to study at college…

15 With your SA teams… Don’t try to do everything well at first…
What are you most passionate about? What could you be the best at? What could you do for the biggest bang? (sorta like a pay) Set up little groups of 5-6, and discuss it!

16 PAOE points The PAOE points are important… but they don’t necessarily measure success very well. If you’re a smaller chapter, and you can’t support a team for the design competition… don’t fret about it… it’s clearly outside of your hedgehog concept… You can get to these later. Pick activities for which you CAN be a success. Think of Chuck Curlin and K-12!

17 MAXIMIZE YOUR CHANCES OF SUCCESS
Find the activities within the SA offerings for which you will have the most chances of becoming a huge success. Find folks with different hedgehog concepts… K-12, Student design competition, Grants, Post-high,… and let them fly (autonomy!)… but inspire them (purpose)… and mentor them with the right skills (mastery)

18 Hedgehog and MBOs Write MBOs that make sense to you and your team…
Pick objectives you WANT to do, because you WANT to be a success. If you must, pick fewer MBOs… but do the ones you can with Rock Star abandon!

19 Questions?
