1 What is this CAHSEE stuff? Freshmen Advisory March, 2015

2 Who?  Every high school student who plans on graduating  First chance to take in 10 th grade  Must pass both parts – English and Math

3 When & Where?  10 th Grade = March  In your classrooms  Two Days – a Tuesday and a Wednesday

4 If you don’t pass or are absent……  Absent – 10 th graders take it in May  11 th Graders can take it twice  12 th Graders can take it five times

5 What?  Test created to improve student achievement  Intended to ensure students graduate with reading, writing and math skills

6 English – Language Arts  Designed to test students’ ability to:  read and write  knowledge of basic literary concepts  familiarity with basic writing strategies  Based on ELA standards through 10 th grade

7 English – Language Arts  72 Multiple Choice Questions  One Essay

8 English – Language Arts  Types of Questions:  Reading –  Word Analysis  Reading Comprehension  Literary Response & Analysis

9 English – Language Arts  Writing  Strategies  Language Conventions  One Essay

10 Mathematics  Designed to test students’ ability with:  statistics  data analysis and probability  number sense  measurement and geometry  mathematical reasoning  algebra  Based on Math standards from grade 6 through Algebra I

11 Mathematics  Two sections  46 multiple choice questions in each

12 Scoring  Scores range from 275 to 450  Passing = 350  Proficient = 380  Proficient is the goal!

Write an essay in which you describe the invention and then explain why this invention has been good or bad for society. Use details and examples to support your ideas.

20 Why is this important?  You must pass the CAHSEE to earn a diploma.  You can start prepping now in your courses.  Pay attention to your 9 th grade teachers now.
