5 INTRODUCTION In Mumbai the Tiffin lunchbox service runs every working day. And everyday without the aid of any modern technology, 5000 delivery boys deliver 2,00,000 lunch boxes to the office workers eager to have a home cooked lunch. Mumbaikars are the only people in the world who have the option of eating homemade food at work without the bother of having to carry a cumbersome lunchbox. DABBAWALA

9 MANAGEMENT PROCESS DABBAWALA

10 PLANNING Planning is a very important aspect.
The dabbawallas mainly plan about.. From where, when and how many dabbas have to be picked from a particular area. Who has to go where and at which station the dabbas have to be assembled. By whom the boxes have to be collected and returned back. What should be the timing for the entire process. What should be the means of transport. Delivery reliability, workforce and dress code. They also have to plan about their coding strategy so that they differentiate between the dabbas. DABBAWALA

various things so that their planning doesn’t fail. They have to organise for.. Means of transport i.e. cycles and railway passes Wooden crates Tiffins (dabbas) Dress code DABBAWALA

DABBAWALA

14 STAFFING There’s no criteria as such for staffing the members. Generation after generation people involve themselves in this business. The dabbawallas generally hail from neighbouring villages There’s no retirement age and people work as long as they want. DABBAWALA

15 LEADERSHIP AND MOTIVATION
The dabbawallas have their community called NMTBSA which has the President, Vice-President and the Secretary. They act as leaders and lead the dabbawallas on a whole. 15-20 dabbawallas work in co-operative units which is leaded and supervised by Mukadams, the group leaders DABBAWALA

16 CO-ORDINATION Co-ordination is the most important aspect in the working of the dabbawallas. Daily one set of dabbawallas collects the Tiffins from the homes, another set unloads at the station and the third set sorts it out and deliver it Thus in a single day the dabbas change hands four to five times. Each group teams up with the other for deliveries. The dabbas reach at the right place because of the remarkable co-ordination between these people. DABBAWALA

17 CONTROL The dabbawallas put control on themselves by following the discipline which is: No alcohol drinking during business hours Wearing white cap during business hours Carry identity cards DABBAWALA
