6 Citizenship is… To be a member of a nation or country and to have full rights and responsibilities under the law.

7 The Application Process: only open to legal immigrants
Immigrate legally and send a Declaration of Intent to INS If over 18 years old, file an application. Live in the US for 5 years OR for 3 years if married to a US citizen Good character (must pass a background check) Take classes in English, US History, & Gov Interview with the INS

8 Pass a Citizenship test
Gaining Citizenship Pass a Citizenship test Applicant must take an oath of allegiance to the United States Officially declared a citizen Children (under the age of 18) of the new citizen are also made citizens at this time

9 American citizens are citizens for life unless…
They become citizens of another country Some have lost it for threatening to overthrow the US government They have served in the military of another country

Freedom of speech Freedom of religion Freedom of the press Protection under the law Access to the judicial system

11 Rights, Duties, & Responsibilities
Duties (things you must do): Serve on jury if called Obey laws Attend School/ have kids attend school Serve in military if drafted Pay taxes

Be informed and vote Participate in your community and government Respect the rights and property of others Respect different opinions and ways of life

Yes, because… He was born in the U.S. Both of his parents are citizens

Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh was born in Namibia. Is she a U.S. citizen? Yep! Both of her parents are citizens.

Nicole Kidman has dual Australian- U.S. citizenship, because she was born in Hawaii
