5 Thing Let’s name some things: -chair -desk -lamp -doo-rag

6 Idea Name some ideas, in noun form: -democracy -love -hate -thought

7 Things that Aren’t Nouns I, you, he, she, it, we, ya’ll, they Words like these are pronouns. We’ll get to those later. To see a complete list of pronouns, go here: http://www.esldesk.com/vocabulary/pronouns

8 Common Noun (CN) A common noun is a noun that is not normally capitalized (exceptions can be if the word is at the beginning of a sentence or begins a piece of dialogue that begins in the middle of a sentence). They are usually less specific than proper nouns. What are some common nouns? -tree -apple -turkey -robber

9 Proper Noun (PN) Nouns that are capitalized, such as names, countries, book titles, months…can you think of others? -times of year (Fall, Spring, etc.) -Specific building names -rand names (including sports teams and cars) -city names -War names (WWII) and specific battles in wars (Battle of the Bulge) -There are more. 10 List Some PN’s Let’s list a few PN’s: -Applebee’s -Michael Jordan -Yellowstone National Park -Thanksgiving

11 Where are they and what kind? Please underline all nouns, and put CN or PN above them. Example: cn pn The police are coming to find Johnny.

12 Where are they and what kind? (answers on next slide) Please write down sentences entirely in your notes. 1.The boy has on an ostentatious neon green belt with a gold buckle. 2. What, are you jacked up on Mountain Dew or something? 3. Rain falls often in April, and the sound of it pattering on my windowsill makes me both thirsty and feel like I have to pee.

(“To pee” is an infinitive verb, and “I”, “me”, and “it” are pronouns.)
