Mock Exam Revision Your step by step guide to getting a great result! Name: Target grade:

Homework Revise for your mock exam using your website, exercise book and this power point.

The big Question How do I prepare for a mock exam that covers a broad range of topics?

How to use this PowerPoint Each topic slide has information and an activity which you do on the following slide You will upload this PowerPoint to your website so that you can revise from home It is important that you complete all the topics within your two revision sessions Remember that the exam will ask you to apply this knowledge to a scenario, so make sure you practice for homework

Topic 1 – Cross Media Synergy Synergy basically means working together to achieve an objective that couldn’t be achieved independently. Cross- media convergence can help with synergy if companies are wise enough to take advantage of the links they have forged. Disney is an obvious example of a synergistic company from the top down from Film Studio to Kids’ TV Channel (where it further plays and promotes its films) to the Disney Store (in the street and online) where your kids can pester parents to buy all the merchandise and DVDs/CDs they’ve seen on the TV/Web or in the cinema. Use the table to give examples of how ‘cross media synergy’ works

Media Sectors/Products/Cross media synergy Media SectorAssociated ProductsExample of Cross Media Synergy Film TV Audio Digital publishing Publishing Gaming Interactive media

Topic 2 – The media production process The production process is: Pre production: Planning, research, storyboards, mind maps, scripts, designing costumes and sets, casting, planning the layout for a webpage Production: Shooting video, making game assets, recording audio for a radio show, taking photos for a magazine, making graphics for a website Post production: Editing a video, compiling a game, putting together the different pages of a magazine

Creating any media product is a process… Media production process Copy this into your exercise book. Pre-production Production Post-production Get pictures to represent each of these activities, choose one or several media sectors to help explain your ideas

Topic 4 – Technological Convergence Technological convergence is the way devices can be used to do a number of things (these different things ‘converge’ on the one device). Get a picture of your phone and label the different ways it can be used/what it can access.

For example… Internet explorer App store Games (sync'd with Xbox) Google maps Sat nav/GPS Activity

Topic 5 – Audiences/hypodermic theory Definition: the ‘hypodermic audience theory’ suggests that media has the power to influence the way that people think/behave. Anecdote: I went to Russia this year when the conflict with the Ukraine began. The BBC made me feel fearful about going and continually did reports that looked like this

However, it was really like… I had an amazing time!

How do these images explain ‘hypodermic audience theory’? Activity

Use this slide to present your ideas

Topic 6 – Regulatory bodies Definition: A ‘regulatory body’ governs and is responsible for a specific media sector or product. They work alongside other agencies to decide and enforce rules about media sectors and products. Use the internet to find out what the following regulatory bodies do, present your findings on the following slide (you could use images to represent each one): BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) PEGI (Pan European Game Information) PCC (Press Complaints Commission) OFCOM (Office of Communications

Topic 7 – Media research Using your exercise book and the internet, use images and words to create definitions of these types of research activity: Primary: Secondary: Qualitative: Quantitative:

Topic 7 - continued Choose one of your definitions, and using an example explain the advantages and disadvantages of that type of research. For example. Using a focus group to test a computer can help you to __________, however ____________

Topic 8 – Production and consumption Definition: Production: to make a media product (website, game, film, magazine, radio show) Consumption: to go on a website, play a game, watch a film, read a magazine, listen to the radio

Why have these things blurred the boundaries between media producers and consumers? Activity

Topic 8 - continued Using images to explain; how can playing a game and listening to music be collective and individual?

Topic 9 Mise en Scene

Upload Use the ‘embed document’ widget to embed this document onto the webpage you have created for your homework.

Extension task 1 Create new content on your weebly site (using the activities from this Power Point) to help you further revise for the mock exam.

Extension task 2 Find an example of a news report (insert into this Power Point) and explain how it might be an example of hypodermic needle theory
