Objectives of a Face-off The objective of a faceoff is a fair and equal start/restart of play. Possession of the ball is necessary to score; control of face offs has a direct bearing on the outcome of every game. “Play shall be started at the beginning of each period and after each goal by facing the ball at the Center X”. 8/15/2015Face - Offs KLOA 02_23_113

Prior to the Face-off In your pre-game with the other official(s): – How does the head ref want to administer faceoffs? How much do you “talk to” the faceoff middies? How tight do you want to manage faceoffs? – Based on skill & level, time in the season. – Review the roles of the other referee(s) – The objective is to be consistent throughout the game! In your pre-game with the coaches & players: – Is everyone aware of the rule changes? Questions? – Is it appropriate to call together the faceoff middies for review? Prior to the opening faceoff @ Center X: – What do you say to the faceoff middies? 8/15/2015Face - Offs KLOA 02_23_114

Center Referee Mechanics Stand over the ball @ X. Look for the signal that the crew is ready. Give the “Down” command – Sticks perpendicular and parallel to the midfield line. – Sticks equidistant and not touching the ball. – Gloves completely around the stick, on the ground, and not touching the stick head or strings. – Ball positioned roughly at the mid-point of both stick heads. – Nothing in the “neutral zone” or “cylinder”, esp. helmet. Entire body to the left of the stick head, esp. helmet, foot, or leg. – How & when do you “reset the players” vs. call the violation? 8/15/2015Face - Offs KLOA 02_23_115

Three Man Mechanics After a goal: – Goal line official retrieves the ball and flips to single side. He then becomes single side. What player scored the goal? – Single side takes the flip and goes to X for the next faceoff however does not cross mid-field. Indicates to the bench side he is ready. – Trail official remains bench side and watches substitutions. Chops his arm to signal and starts the 20 second timer. Before the “Down” command is given: – Single side counts players with arms raised. Points when ready. Single side has all counts on the faceoff! – Bench side manages the benches and waits for the single side signal. Gives the center the “go ahead point” when ready. – Single side and bench side watch for wing and offensive zone violations. They help Center X with the faceoff middies if needed. 8/15/2015Face - Offs KLOA 02_23_116

Differences for Two Man Mechanics After a goal: – Goal line official retrieves the ball and flips to trail. He remains on the same side of the field. What player scored the goal? – Trail takes the flip and goes to X for the next faceoff and crosses mid- field. Indicates to the other official that he is ready. – The “non-faceoff” official chops his timer on and watches substitutions. Before the “Down” command is given: – The “non-faceoff” official counts players with arms raised. Points when ready. This official also has wing violations on both wings. 8/15/2015Face - Offs KLOA 02_23_117

Situations – Page 1 The team that is man down scores a goal. They are still man down until penalty time expires or the offended team scores. A man down faceoff commences. – If the wings are occupied for the faceoff, the player(s) sitting out the penalty must wait in the penalty area until the penalty time expires AND possession is called. Ensure that the bench area is aware of and understands this! – If the wing is un-occupied and time expires the player may re-enter the field of play immediately. Watch for Illegal Body Checks and Unnecessary Roughness! On a faceoff the Team A faceoff player moves after “set” and before the whistle. Wing player A2 or B2 crosses the restraining or wing line just before the whistle blows. – Because Team A faceoff player had a violation, the faceoff did not take place. Award the ball to Team B. Ignore the wing or restraining line violation(s). 8/15/2015Face - Offs KLOA 02_23_118

Situations – Page 2 After the faceoff, the ball touches a player or players and goes out of bounds in the area between the defensive lines. The officials cannot determine who touched the ball last. – Faceoff again. Team A faceoff player clamps and rakes the ball out of bounds however possession has not been called yet. – Award the ball to Team B at the point where it left the field of play. Team A wing player crosses the wing line prior to the whistle. – “Play on” and see what happens. Team A wing player approaches the faceoff scrum and legally body checks Team B. – No call. 8/15/2015Face - Offs KLOA 02_23_119

Situations – Page 3 Team A faceoff player clamps the ball and delays drawing or raking the ball for more than a second. – Award the ball to Team B because A is “withholding the ball from play”. Team A faceoff player clamps the ball and draws it behind him using his gloves. His gloves ARE fully wrapped around his crosse. – No call. Team A faceoff player clamps the ball and Team B faceoff player clamps his crosse over the crosse of Team A faceoff player, preventing Team A player to move the ball. – Award the ball to Team A as B is guilty of “Illegal Procedure”. There is a loose ball and a flag down at the end of the period. Where is the faceoff? – There is no faceoff as flag down at the end of a period signifies possession. – Assess the foul and award the ball to the offended team at Center X. 8/15/2015Face - Offs KLOA 02_23_1110
