1 Latitude and Longitude Notes

2 Latitude and Longitude
• Are imaginary lines on a map • They help you to pin point an exact location on a map

3 Latitude Tells you how far NORTH or SOUTH of the equator you are. 0 (zero) degrees latitude is called the EQUATOR.

4 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 15 45 75 105 120 135 150 165 180 E F G H North South

5 Longitude Tells you how far EAST or WEST of the prime meridian you are. 0 (zero) degrees longitude is called the PRIME MERIDIAN.

6 Longitude 180 degrees Longitude = International Dateline
Time Zones Imaginary lines extending from the North and South Pole. Measured degrees, E & W of the Prime Meridian (0 degrees) 180 degrees Longitude = International Dateline

8 42° 43’48”N by 78° 49’43”W When you are given the location this way LATITUDE is always listed FIRST and LONGITUDE is listed SECOND.

9 Brain Pop – Latitude and Longitude
( 4 min)

10 Plot the Following Points on Your Map
C A 25°N, 100°W 80°S, 65°W B D 30°S, 100°E 45°N, 105°E
