Climate Regions Categorized by average temperature & precipitation.

Zones  Climate zones occur at similar latitudes.  Warm at the Equator, cooler toward the poles

Tropical  0° to 30° latitudes  Hot all year, average >64°F  Precipitation 100+ inches.  Tropical Wet- rains consistently  Tropical Wet & Dry- distinct dry season

Arid  30° to 40° latitudes  Evaporation is greater than precipitation.  Constant high pressure system causes an absence of storms.  Desert- evaporation is greater than 50%  Steppe- semi-arid

Temperate  30° to 60° latitude  Dramatic periodic weather change (seasons).  Moderate- near seas or oceans; warm to hot summers, cool winters.  Continental- away from regulating effects of oceans, large temperature variations; warm summers, cold winters.

Polar  60° to 90° latitude, near poles  Cool, short summers, extremely cold winters.  Tundra  Ice Cap

Highland  Climate varies depending on elevation.

Mt. Kilimanjaro
