WORLD CLIMATE REGIONS
Low Latitudes (tropical regions)High latitudes (polar regions) Mid Latitudes (temperate regions) Low Latitudes (tropical regions) Mid Latitudes (temperate regions) High latitudes (polar regions)
Low Latitude Climate Regions
TROPICAL WET found in the rain forest daily rain always hot and humid little variation in temperature
TROPICAL WET AND DRY found in tropical regions seasonal rains cooler in dry season hotter in wet season
SEMIARID found in the interior of continents rains less than 16” per year summers hot winters mild to cold
Mid-latitude climate regions
MEDITERRANEAN found around the Mediterranean and in other areas summers dry and hot winters cool and rainy
MARINE WEST COAST found near the ocean in Europe and North America moderate temperatures rainy and foggy throughout the year
HUMID SUBTROPICAL found on the east coasts of continents summers hot and humid winters mild abundant rain
HUMID CONTINENTAL found in the interiors of continents mild to hot summers cold winters 20-40” of yearly rain
High Latitude Climate Regions
SUBARCTIC found in the high latitudes summers are short and cool winters are long and very cold little precipitation
TUNDRA found in arctic regions or in high altitudes very cold summers and winters permafrost
ICE CAP found on the North and South Poles bitter cold all year very little precipitation
Other Climate Regions
HIGHLANDS found in high elevations rainfall depends upon direction of slope face temperature varies
DESERT found in the mid-latitudes and the tropics rains less than 10” per year temperatures can be hot or cold Antarctica is classified as a desert. Why?
THE FOUR VEGETATION REGIONS OR BIOMES
Rainforests Deciduous forests Coniferous forests Chaparral forests
WHAT TYPES OF FORESTS ARE THESE?
2. GRASSLANDS TROPICAL GRASSLANDS also called savannasTEMPERATE GRASSLANDS also called steppes
Arctic tundra—found within the Arctic Circle where it is cold and dry Alpine tundra—found anywhere at high altitude where it is cold and dry

Climate Introduction to
Water, Climate, and Vegetation. Earth’s Water Water covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface, most of it is saltwater. Some areas never have enough water.
Chapter 3 – Weather & Climate
Francisci WG.2a. The low latitude climates are always between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The climate is tropical, wet, hot.
World Climate Patterns
Tropical Zones (between 0° and 23.5° ) Tropical Wet Tropical Wet and Dry Temperate Zones (between 23.5 ° and 66.5°) Arid Semiarid Mediterranean Humid.
CLIMATE REGIONS. Found near low latitudes—tropical rain forests and tropical savanna Hot and wet year round with an average temperature of 80° Yearly.
