Injuries to the Skeletal System

Is this weight bearing or non weight bearing? What is a long term benefit that this type of activity provides to the skeletal system?

Lesson Objectives knowledge of the different sports injuries that can happen to the skeletal system Knowledge of exercise and the effect s it has on the skeletal system Knowledge of diet and the effects it has on the skeletal system

Fractures  Compound: Broken bone that comes through the skin  Greenstick: Break only part way across the bone  Simple: Fracture in one line, no displacement  Stress: Overuse injuries usually in weight bearing areas such as lower leg (shin splints)

Guess the Fracture

Joint Injuries  Tennis & Golfers Elbow  Dislocations  Sprains  Torn Cartilage

 Tennis & Golfers Elbow This is an injury cause by overuse to the tendons at the elbow joint.  Dislocation This is when a bone is forced out of its normal position as a result of a hard impact causing the blood to be displaced.  Sprain This is a damaged ligament, commonly caused by a twisting of the ankle  Torn Cartilage Cartilage is a protective substance that covers the end of a bone. Tearing can be caused by twisting at a joint e.g. the knee
