3 DRUG TALK 101 WHAT MAKES A DRUG A DRUG? The basics for 3 rd -5 th grades

4 A drug is anything that changes the way the body acts or reacts. A drug can be legal or illegal. Legal drugs are any drug prescribed by your doctor. Let’s define “ Drug ” Legal drugs also can be bought at the drugstore or grocery store.

5 Are there good reasons to use drugs Responsible reasons to use drugs: –Because you are under a doctors care for a sickness or illness –You have an allergic reaction to something. Responsible people can also buy medicine over the counter(OTC) –if they need relief from everyday aches and pains Headaches toothaches Stomachache

6 Legal drugs come in many forms but they should ALWAYS come with a doctors directions. Alcohol and tobacco are also legal drugs.

7 A legal drug can become addicting They can also be abused. Abusing something means that you use it wrong or for the wrong reasons. Addicted means that your body needs the drug to work.

8 HARMFUL, ILLEGAL DRUGS Illegal drugs are any drug that cannot be purchased in a store. Marijuana, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, are all commonly known “street” drugs because that is where many users buy the drugs. Many street drugs make the user not care about anything or anyone.(Addict)

9 A prescribed drug used by someone else can also become illegal. If my doctor gives me cough medicine and I allow you to use it. If you fake a sickness to get a prescription and give away/sell the medicine If you have leftover medicine and give it to someone else

10 WHAT DRUGS DO TO THE BODY In the brain drugs may dull your senses, they may also make you sleepy Drugs also affect your decision making skills –They may cause you to think that walking in front of a moving car will not cause you to be hurt. –Drugs also damage the body. A person that is addicted to alcohol may suffer from painful stomach problems.

12 Side effects of using drugs Drugs also impair vision Change your sleep patterns Impair you memory Cause you to always be afraid or anxious Affect your appetite Cause you to always be sad “depressed”

13  When a person no longer feels any difference when they take the drug, it is said that this person has built up a “resistance” to it.  Resistance is defined as the body’s ability to withstand something.  Many times our bodies will build up resistance to prescribed medicines  The more of something you take the more the body needs to make it feel different.

14 There is always someone to talk to: Parents are excellent listeners Teachers, counselors or coaches will do everything possible to find you or your friend help
