Photosynthesis Chapter 8 Biology Ms. Meek

Hook  If all the plants in the world died would we still be able to live?  Silently  Write down your thoughts  Be ready to share out your thoughts

Objective  3:6 SWBAT describe photosynthesis including its purpose and location within a cell.  I can explain where photosynthesis occurs and know how to explain the process.  STANDARD 1F: Students know usable energy is captured from sunlight by chloroplasts and is stored through the synthesis of sugar from carbon dioxide.

IBE  What do plants need in order to live.

Vocabulary  Photosynthesis  Chloroplasts  Chlorophyll Start making a vocabulary chart for each word in your notebook 1 st Science Definition 2 nd Picture 3 rd Your Definition (HW) 4 th Write a sentence using the word (HW)

Review  What are reactants and product?

Notes  Use note template to fill in the key terms  REMINDER : During notes you are silent while the teacher is talking. If you have a question or comment raise your hand and wait silently to be called on.

Energy & Life Autotrophs: Use light energy from the sun to make their own food. Example: Plants Heterotrophs : Cannot use the sun’s energy directly and must obtain energy from foods they consume. Example: Animals

Think Box When a tiny seed grows into a tall tree where does it get its mass?

Photosynthesis  Plants use the energy of sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into high energy carbohydrates, and oxygen and a waste product.

 Photosynthesis happens in two stages.  Stage 1: Chloroplasts capture sunlight and turn it into energy.  Stage 2: Plant cells use energy from stage 1 as well as hydrogen (H) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to produce sugars such as glucose.

 What happens during photosynthesis can be represented using a chemical equation.  A chemical equation shows what molecules or substances are involved and how they combine or divide during a chemical process or reaction.  Photosynthesis can be described using the equation above.  The substances on the left of the arrow are the raw materials or substances that begin the reaction and the substances on the right of the arrow are the products that are created by the reaction.

Photosynthesis Equation  Carbon Dioxide + Water -> Sugars + Oxygen Photosynthesis uses the energy of sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into high energy sugar and oxygen

Photosynthesis  Takes place in the chloroplasts  Requires light and chlorophyll  Pigments are light absorbing molecules  Plants principal pigment is Chlorophyll  Green light is reflected by leafs

Quick Check

Cube activity  Rate your understanding  Spicy (Feeling Great)  Medium(Feeling Good)  Blue Group: Mild (Feeling OK)  Now I will put you in groups

Cube Activity  Work with you group  Together answer every question  Write down questions and answers in your notebook  Quiet voice Remember: banana  Only 1 students work per group is checked. I decide who all that is everyone's grade. WORK TOGETHER

Exit Ticket  Silently  By yourself  No Notes When you are done turn it in to the clear bin

Today’s Objective  3:7 SWBAT explain the generalized reaction for photosynthesis.

Lab Review Day  Get out lab worksheet  Discuss Process  Watch Video  Graph Results  Work on Lab Report

Discussion Questions 1. Which cup exhibited a faster rate of photosynthesis? With CO2 cup or Without 2. What data supports this? 3. So, what effect did CO2 concentration have on the rate of photosynthesis? 4. What errors could have occurred during this lab?

Gallery Walk  Visit every station silently  Write down your thoughts  Put a ? Or *

Line Graphs  Watch how to create a line graph  Create a line graph with your group  Each student makes their own  Be ready to present data

Lab Reports Review Examples  Write out Hypothesis  Materials  Procedure: In your own words  Results  Conclusion  TYPE FOR HW: DUE THURSDAY Grade Reports are due this weekend

Chlorophyll & Chloroplast Ms. Meek

Objectives  3:8 SWBAT explain the importance of chlorophyll in photosynthesis.  3.9 SWBAT label a picture of the structure of the chloroplast (stoma, thylakoids, grana)

Importance of Photosynthesis  Think, Pair, Share  Be ready to share your partners response.

Chlorophyll  Chlorophyll is a molecule of chloroplast  Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight  Gathers suns energy with light absorbing molecules called pigments  Does not absorb green, it is reflected

Photosynthesis  photo” means light, “synthesis” putting together  Chlorophyll captures the light energy needed to drive photosynthesis  Carbon Dioxide + Water + Chlorophyll and Sunlight = Oxygen + Sugar

Think Box  How do solar panels work?

Chloroplasts Stroma are regions outside the thylakoid membranes in chloroplasts Thylakoids are saclike membranes found in chloroplasts Grana are stacks of thylakoids

Chloroplast Diagram

Complete Worksheet  Quietly work on worksheet  If you have a question raise your hand  Underline point that discuss Chlorophyll  Be prepared to share answers with class

Quiz  Silently  Answer all questions  Follow instructions

In what ways can we use sunlight?

Objectives  3:10 SWBAT state what happens in the light dependent (light collection) and light independent (using energy for converting CO 2 into sugars) reactions in generalized terms.  I can explain what happens during light dependent and light independent reactions.

Light Dependent Reactions  Require LIGHT  Plants require light to grow  Reaction use energy from light to produce  ATP  NADPH

Light Dependent Reaction  Produces oxygen gas and converts ADP and NADP+ into energy carriers ATP and NADPH  This reaction is the source of nearly all of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere

Light Independent Reaction  Does not require light  Called the Calvin Cycle  Uses ATP and NADPH to produce high- energy sugars

Think Box How do you think the amount of light affects plant growth?

Light Independent Reaction (Calvin Cycle)  Produces High-Energy Sugars  These are high energy compounds that can be stored for a long time  Removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and produces energy rich sugars.

Light Independent Reaction (Calvin Cycle)  Plant uses sugars to build more complex macromolecules such as cellulose that it needs for growth and development.  Organisms eat the plants and can use that energy stored in carbohydrates.

Post it Questions  Create a question for our game!  Write it on the post it  Can be  True or false  Multiple choice: Create answer choices  Single response

Game Time  Groups 3-4  One white board per group  2 minutes to answer question with group  Use a quiet voice  WINNING GROUP gets 5 extra notebook points

Create a Foldable  Photosynthesis  Light Dependent Reaction  Light Independent Reaction Work independently Use Quiet Voice Draw Pictures and my definitions in your own words. Be ready to share yours If you finish early read Page 210-213 and add more key facts

EXIT TICKET  Complete Silently  By yourself  No Notes  Explain your Claims
